I'll cut to the chase....three letters..X J S...

I'm currently selling my 928 as i fancy a change, until now i've been thinking of getting a Chim (928 money + some saved up "car cash") but of late i've been looking at Browns Lanes finest...

Totally different proposition to a TVR i know but it would leave me with a fair bit of cash still in the bank (all of the money which i've saved to put towards the Chim and maybe a bit from the 928 sale too, depending on how much i spend on the Jaaaaag)

I've been having a gander and would be looking to spend up to 3k....i'm amazed by how many solid, rust free cars there are about! I've spotted a few nice looking 4.0 cars in this range, best one to go for? I've always liked them and i think the facelift cars finished in dark red with magnolia doeskin are stunning!

Like the 928 is now the XJS wouldn't be a daily, i've got an MX5 for that, so would be a toy for sunny days!

This would be my second Jag...i had an XJ40 when i was 21...my mum hated it, thought it was an old mans car!...i'm 25 now, still too young for a Jag? wink

Anyway....i'll prepare for the onslaught

Probably mad, but who cares,
logic needs never to be a consideration when buying cars.

You're not only mad but you appear to be blind too. They are sinfully ugly. Mind you, you did have a 928... wink

Still do sir! still do! on ebay and PH as we speak though....

The 928 is a very marmitey car i think, they look a lot better in the metal than photos though! The one aspect i love most about my 928 is the look of it, for a car designed in the '70's i think it is stunning! But i would say that....

As for the Jag i don't think they are ugly, they arn't what i'd describe as being classically pretty but i definitely think they are good looking old barges!

I never really liked the look of the XJS when they were new, but I think they have aged well and looked better now than they did then. You get a lot of car for the money with them.

I think its strange change of mind from a TVR to a jag... very different type of car, IMO if its a fun weekend car i'd go for the TVR. Buts that personal preference... not saying i don't like the XJS,because i do like them, but totally different cars and I reckon a TVR is a better weekend car.

Yep, agree with you, very different cars... I stumbled across the Jag option by accident, saw a few very tidy examples in CCW. To be honest it's also part of me being a little sensible....i really shouldn't be spending the sort of money the TVR option would cost at the moment. As i said it would be bought with cash, not on the never never but if i'm wearing my sensible hat i should probabley try and keep some of the cash in the bank.

BUT i still want a toy...while the Jag is very different to the Chim it is still a car i've always wanted and would be "special" enough to have as a toy...and i get to keep a few quid in the bank.

I hate sensible hats, my OH keeps putting mine on my head, which is preventing me from trading in my car for a mk2 golf GTi 8v... probabaly due to my last '88 golf that was a bit of a money pit. There is also a lovely lovely GTi, completely standard (which is what i want) in the PH classifieds at the moment, for just shy of £1500. Its killing me not to go and look at it as I could afford it once ive got rid of my car... but the costs of keeping it on the road with the relatively high milage (15,000-18,000) P.A. will be fairly high.

Thats the first time I've ever seen that when referring to the purchase of an XJSbiggrin Having said that I like 'em too, especially with the quad headlight versions, but then again, I'm probably a bit strange toowobble

I can report that a TVR (Griffith in my case) is definately a good weekend car though, and depending on what you get, probably less of a money pit than an XJS, as TVR's such as Griffiths and Chims use a lot of Ford and Vauxhall kit in them, so parts are available and sometimes dont cost the earth either.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Cheers

I was young when it was launched. It was a big build-up and after the E-Type, I rushed to the newsagent to buy my Wednesday edition of Motor. I have never been so disappointed and outraged in my life. I have never forgiven Jaguar since. wink

I was looking at getting a 330i BMW after lots of Audi’s. mate said “I saw a nice XJ8 the other day in a garage for sale”

After a bit of looking about I now have a very nice XJ8 sat on the drive and I am only 36 will now not look back, ok ok in the snow it was not as handy as the Audi’s with quattro grip. It was totally useless to be honest, even when I put the wife in the boot. 18mpg is a pain at times. But I am thinking a 928 is in the same ball park.

As a wise man once said. “ it is far better to regret something you have done, than to regret some thing you have not done”

I bought a 92 late version XJS 4'0 a few years ago. Kept it for 1 year and got my money back
I also had a 911 at the time and now have a Cerbera
WHat I can tell you is that these cars ARE special - they drink loads but everytime i went out in the old girl I loved it. Very chilled out, everyone loves them, look the dogs b's if you get the right version. Go for the post face lift model with the Big bumpers and the nice wheels. They are GORGEOUS!
Watch out for clunky front suspension (bushes) and water coming in down through the blocked channels, into the footwells I had to have a large patch welded in to sort it.
3K should get you a nice one if you keep your eyes open. Ebay and Jag mags are your friend

Cheers

MDT- Yep, 18 in the Porsche is 'long run' territory...being steady on the motorway she'll give 20-21....around town it's down to 12-15 i guess. But do you know what....i've never begrudged it...it's all part of the fun of owning something a bit different!

Simon- Thanks for the advice! Late facelift stuff is what i'm looking at, thinking 4.0, i've seen a few manuals but i reckon the XJS is more of a wafter!! Probably go for a slush box, was yours an auto?

Sorry to say I actually laughed smile but perhaps I'm too jaded by how solid and rust free my example looked and wasnt. Certainly the later facelift cars were much better in this regard.

Big problem areas are the radius arm mounts and inner wings.

Pre-facelift cars had inboard rear brakes which are a nightmare - talking 8 hours or so to change the pads, discs and handbrake pads. Only to have to do it again when you realise the reason they were rubbish is because the diff was leaking oil onto them. (not my experience, but certainly not an uncommon one).

Also, every component in the vee of the 12 cylinder version gets cooked - wires will be brittle, anything rubber will be destroyed and spark plug leads will crack.
