Hello all, I'm hoping you wise chaps will be able to offer some advice. I don't drive at the moment as I have no practical need for a car, but I would like a little plaything for the weekend - something for jaunts into the countryside on a sunny afternoon. My job makes me an exceptionally high insurance risk, so I will get absolutely hammered on insurance; I'm looking at about £2000 TPFT on a Micra, to give you an idea. I don't care about speed or performance, I just want something small, lively and preferably convertible. My current thinking is towards an MG Midget or a classic Mini, maybe a Daihatsu Copen or a Nissan Figaro. An MX5 is a possibility, but it's the absolute limit of what I'm prepared to insure. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Uphillbothways

Mk 1 Golf convertibles are always fun, lose no money anymore and come with some non-GTI type engines.

My dear old mum used to have one of those years ago. Bloody awful, but it's one of those cars that makes you instantly trustworthy, like the Morris Minor. I'm not sure I could bring myself to drive one, but it's sorely tempting as a means of camouflaging my caddishness.

How would classic insurance stack up for an MG or similar? I even have a highly modified Mk1 MX5 (turbo etc, major insurance companies wouldn't touch it) under a very reasonable classic policy.

Classic or kit sound like they should be the cheapest options. Although £2k for a road legal built kit will mean less practical and possibly not a looker.

So how about a Morris Minor convertible?

I think the Copen or, if you don't mind left-hand drive, the Cappuccino would be a laugh as weekend jaunt cars.

Having a think about it, if you want a cheap fun car full of character, you've got to go a long way to beat one of these

£2k will get you a decent one and possibly tax exempt too. Cheap to maintain, insurance should be good (try the NFU). And while it's not fast, it really won't matter as you'll still have a wail of a time driving it.

Smart Roadster....gotta be cheap on insurance - they are only 700cc or something? My wife used to have a Smart ForFour and for what it was that was fun and charismatic (you can tell it's a charismatic car as my wife used to wave to other Smart drivers and they always used to wave back).

Out of interest, what job do you do that makes your insurance so high?

Kit car or classic insurance.

I pay around 800 a year on a Saab 9000 but only 200 on my kit and, crazily, only 120 on a Porsche 928.

Back in the 70's - 80's I loved the 2CV, I had three of them. They will go well off road, no problem. Road holding very entertaining wet or dry including lift off oversteer, would run flat out all day and not worry about your licence.

A lot more fun than a basic Fiesta at that time. The 2CV is a truly charisatic car.
