What fun reliable car under 7k?
Discussion
How much are you willing to spend running it and how much practicality do you need?
Without being facetious virtually anything can be made reliable if you keep on top of it. Some ideas:
Without being facetious virtually anything can be made reliable if you keep on top of it. Some ideas:
- Can you get a decent S2000 for that? Not much of an improvement over the MX5 IMHO, although considerably quicker and a bit better built
- You could definitely get a mint TVR S3 with a big pile of change for that. Looked after they're reliable, they're quite practical for a sports car, they're no slocuh despite being the baby of the range and and they don't even cost that much to run
- Porsche 944 S2 (mentioned above, but it is such a suitable candidate, could look at a very nice turbo for that price too)
- You could probably just about get an RX8 for that, but I'd be worried about depreciation and reliability, so maybe not (it may be a one off, but a colleague's new-ish RX8 has given far more problems than my ageing TVR or kit cars ever did...)
- Leftfield idea: Lotus Excel? From the era of the Toyota tie up, it has reasonably reliable mechanicals and a galvanised chassis. Four seats and reputedly sublime handling; mini-supercar looks
- Corrado VR6? Future classic. They do seem to cost quite a lot to keep in good nick (think Porsche running costs according to several owners I've spoken to) but they're unlikely to leave you stranded
- E36 M3?
- Or, the very sensible suggestion, Octavia vRS? Early ones shouldn't be depreciating too much any more

03??? Surely not! All Y plates for that sort of money!
Elises and VX220s do suffer from significant seasonal price fluctuations and this weather will have driven prices even higher than they usually are at this time of year. I wouldn't be surprised if an early VX220 is a grand or two more expensive now than it was 3 months ago. Edited by kambites on Thursday 22 April 10:51
Erm, is it just me or do you already have a fun, reliable, not too impractical car at the moment? The MX5 is a very good contender in itself.
OP, tell us why you're considering a change from that car first please, before you get every car under the sun thrown at you as a potential candidate.
