Right, so a mate of mine had a diesel vectra. It's a Vectra C but pre facelift. I believe it's a 2.2.

The back box of the exhaust has fallen off, and I gather he doesn't actually have the funds to go about replacing it at the moment, so he's still using it for local journeys.

The car itself isn't down on power and drives normally, and is no louder than normal. It is literally just the very end bit that has come off.

But what concerns me is could gasses be creeping into the main bit of the car? The exit to the exhaust is now by the side of the rear wheel well - so well back, but it's still a bit of a concern....

I know for a fact that my car has fresh air vents in the rear arch, whether a Vectra is the same & this could allow gases back in i would not like to say. Personally i'd get it fixed!

Vectra back box ? Prob cost £20. Tell him to stop being a cheapskate (and making a racket) and get it sorted !
I have told him...I thought some 'oooh that's not safe' responses might persuade him. Part of his argument is that it seriously isn't any louder than normal.

He has enough money for a Vectra C 2.2 but can't afford a new backbox for it?

Tell him he WILL die from carbon monoxide poisoning. He won't in a million years, but it'll put the boot up him.

Slight edit : His bank manager was stupid enough to lend him enough to buy one. At 21% I might add.

If he dies, mark it down to natural selection.

The back half of my exhaust fell off once and I carried on driving it like that for 6 months odd because I liked the noise. Didn't do me any harm. I only replaced it because the MoT was due.

I wouldn't bother getting it fixed- it won't effect the performance- its a boosted engine- minimal tuning and even if there was- at that far back it would effect the VE curve way below the engines operating range.

I think it more likely the fumes will get sucked into a low pressure zone- such as the recirculating wake behind the vauxhall than inside. Low risk IMO.

Pretty much off topic but I once ripped the entire exhaust off my original mini when I was a student. A particularly viscious speed bump was the problem although I will admit a 2.5 inch straight pipe with twin exits was a touch unsuitable for the 998cc of power I had under my control.

The pipe was so long (popped off from the down pipes) I had no alternative but to take the sunroof out and stick the exhaust through. Backbox on the rear seat, front end several feet above the roof.

Cheeky bds at the garage I took it to had the cheek (bearing in mind the car sounded like a tractor and had the equivalent of an automotive lance protruding from the roof) to say "what seems to be the problem, mate?"

biggrin

As for the chap with the Vectra. Don't worry about it. If he DOES die then he deserved it for getting finance at 21%.

I doubt it'll be a problem. As far as I know the Vectra doesn't have any air intakes or other intakes at the rear of the car.

I can understand him doing it as well. I drive a Vectra C of about the same age, but have the turbo version with twin backboxes. Thanks to the ingenuity of my local garage the exhaust is now suspended by a impressive array of bent bolts and jubilee clips as the hangers have all rusted away (the exhaust itself is still intact). The main reason was the £650 price I got just to buy the parts for a complete replacement exhaust system. I doubt the car is worth much more than that now...!

I had the same problem with a 306 Dturbo, didn't bother fixing it as it made no difference, although in traffic passengers in the rear complained of a slight smell!
From the front it smelt fine and none of us died - result!

Not sure if it's the bank manager being stupid there.....
