2006 Mercedes A-Class - experiences?

My Dad (mid-70's) is thinking of buying a 2006 Merc A Class 1.5. Is there anything I should get him to check out before parting with my inheritance?

My sister has got a 2006 A150
Only minor things
Generally women drive them so look for typical damage :spin
I made her refuse one because it had dodgy rear shocks. One had white gunk under the oil cap may have been nothing but not work finding out. If you are paying good money for it (e.g. dealer prices) All seem to have problems with the parcel shelf which is £80 odd.
