I work in the the peripherals of the car industry.

We got hammered last year. This year is marginally better, but not the magic road to happiness... What's going on in the economy because, it seems that there are a huge number of "10" registered cars on the motorways that I use on my 50 mile commute to work and I can't see why...

Fleet sales? People prepared to take out stupid finance deals so they can have the latest letter on their reg plate?

Public sector workers in denial? Plain old poor financial sense? Guy I know was depressed about potentially losing his job, and had a kid on the way. So he did the sensible thing and traded in his Fiesta for a brand new Focus at whatever a month for the next million years so he'd have something reliable with space for the kid. Madness! Having said that- I've agonized over every financial situation I've made, and have still managed to end up in negative equity, so I'm hardly the best judge. biggrin

Vans, you can understand, for long standing businesses replacing asset, but my personal view is to see lots of variety, from Yaris to E Class and beyond.

We're a small firm, quick on the toes, etc, but hey...... Take a look - do you think there's a lot of new metal?

Also, I can't see they aren't scrappage types either...

How can you tell they aren't scrappage cars? I know 5 people that have used scrappage on sheds, one ended up with a Golf TDI, one a Hyundai I30, one a BMW 120d, one a New Fiesta and the other a Freelander 2, so IMO there isn't a type of car bought using scrappage just some people that probably brought forward a purchase or decided to enjoy cash rather than sitting on it not earning any interest.

I've been driving round in a '10' reg car, but it's a car my employer has rented for testing some new products.

I don't think I will ever buy a new car - motorbikes, yes, but not cars.

Hmm, well I see hardly any "10" cars on the road.

I am seeing quite a few 10 plate cars every day in Sheffield. Just to mention a few: New E Class, new C Class, the usual Kia/Hyundai/Suzuki things, Fords (usually Ka and Fiesta), a few Fiat 500s (including 2 or 3 Abarth ones), and yesterday the first new '10 Astra I've seen on the road.

Scrapage allowance, savers who are not getting any intrest on savings, hence may as well buy a new car and enjoy the money. The threat of hyper inflation and de-valueing pound possibly means this is the time to buy a new car.

Despite my long-standing dislike of buying a new car, we are thinking of one now. Why? Because family circumstances are changing, we're planning to keep it for years and so could take the opportunity to get exactly what we want, rather than an approximation in the used market. We shall see.

Some of it is scrappage allowance and the threat of it being pulled soon. Some of it is the novelty of a 10 plate. Some is down to easier availability of credit again. And some of it I fear is because of stupid people who took the announcement that we are now 'officially' out of recession as the nod to relax and return to their old ways of living a life on finance.

If there are more new cars about then that increases supply and means depreciation is higher so better for used car buyers ( like me!).

Saw my first X1 at the Channel Tunnel the other day on a 10 plate, haven't seen any others yet though!

Seen a few. Can't see the point in it - surely it's an X3 facelift?

I think it's got something to do with the different look of '10' numberplates opposed to the 08,58,09...numberplates we're used to and have lived with for nearly 9 years now
