A friend has a new 1.6 petrol SEAT Ibiza, it's n/a but if you use a heavy throttle and let off before 4000rpm it makes a dumping whooshing noise which is fairly audible.

If you go above 4000rpm it doesn't do it, but the car is much more jerky on gear changes (presume this might have something to do with it?).

I've not come across this before. Anyone know what it is and what it is for?

Also is it unique to VAG or are more car makers doing this to n/a petrol motors these days?

Cheers.

I'm guessing its probably excess fuel being put into the engine before its time and needing a way to burn off the excess fuel! hows his fuel economy just now? scratchchin

Inlet manifold cracked? Air leak somewhere?
Nope it's got some device that does this, you can see it under the bonnet (don't have a picture though at the mo).

See above. Your friend is extraordinarily sad.

I think they get about 33/34mpg driven on the economy side or normal driving on fairly good steady runs. So not babying it, but not really making use of the engine that much.

It's a factory stock car, no mods, it was bought new from the dealership the other year and has always done it. We wonder if it had something to do with making the gearchange (manual) more smooth, as when it doesn't dump over 4000rpm it lurches far more while changing gear.

So I assume as all we've had so far are "it's broken" and "chav mods" then nobody actually knows?? hehe

The C2 VTS makes this sort of noise when giving it a thrashing.. sounds almost charged too..

Not sure what it is/what it is doing ..

Could it be a dodgy brake/clutch servo vacuum reservoir ?

Both the VTS and VTR do the whining noise whilst driving it hard.

No idea why!

Are you SURE it's not a 1.4 tsi or a 1.8t?

We need pictures... (Custard optional!)

Well from a sensible point of view if the car is n/a as you say then there can be no whoosh of air as there is no positive pressure in the inlet manifold to release in fact at part throttle it will be in vacuum.

So I wouls hazard a guess at something completely unrelated.

Yep it's a 1.6 16v when the new shape Ibiza first came out, not sure the TSI was even available then, the TDI wasn't as they were still selling the old model along side.

I'll try and get some pics, but won't be until tonight though.

Essentially it's exactly the same as this: http://uk.cars.yahoo.com/car-reviews/car-and-drivi...

It's a 5 door, 5 speed manual in met black with optional 17" rims.

I agree I don't think it's induction related either.

Well thf, you're not exactly giving us much to go on. It reads something like

'There's a thing on the engine. I haven't described what it looks like, or where it is, nor have i taken a picture, and sometimes, it makes a whoosh noise. Tell me what it is'
Well what do you want?

I'm sat in an office on the 5th floor in the middle of London. The car I suspect is with it's owner somewhere in central Bedfordshire.

I've described it as best as I can, I don't know what it is, so can't give any further info on it. However I suspect if someone did know what it is and what it's for, then they'd ID it easily from the info supplied.

How long does the whoosing noise last for? Does it only come in when changing gear or does it do it on over run?

Seeing as people are thinking about Vacuum leaks, what about the release bearing rumbling when pressure is applied?

How about telling us where it is located and roughly what shape it is ?
