Remember when you were younger, did you ever hear ridiculous stories being told by your friends dad about cars/ their cars in terms of performance?

sorry im pretty bored on a friday so thought may as well start a thread!

I remember being in the back of a friends dad's mk5 golf gti, with him telling us (with a bags of enthusiasm and arrogance) that the 2.7ltr engine really pulls, and hes hit 160mph in it, whilst of course, out racing against a mate with his r32, which even though it had a 3.7ltr engine (r..32...retard) he was still a tad faster in his......

When I was about 19 and on my second car (white vauxhal carlotn 2l manual) I was telling a mate what a gerat car it is and that it may not have the same engine, the suspension and the chassis is similar to lotus carlton.

I got sincerely offended when he told me it's nothing like that and that my car is ste onthe performance front.

Almost the same thing, but years ago my mate told me that his dad averaged 120mph on back roads between his (the dads) house and his mums house in a.... Renault 21 estate.

He probably forgot to include the decimal point.

He probably would have ended up in the same field as that one though. Except he'd be on his roof.

I still hear it now, even into GCSE age...

I was being dropped to the bus stop in a mates mums' Megane, and he was telling me; "It's limited to 155mph but can do more." I then told him that by the sound of the engine, it was a <2 litre diesel. He then went on to tell me "...Yeah but it's turbocharged so that pretty much doubles the engine size."

It doesn't stop there. In addition to it's 155+mph performance, he said that; "The Meganes engines are so good, that they don't need any air or water to cool them. They're cooled down by the diesel."

Haha, i remember this renault.. brilliant.

I had a friend who told me he could easily get 125mph, and push 130mph out of his pug 106 quicksliver. So i took when I was out for a drive in it, I tested it for him. Sure enough, when I was driving down a big hill the speedo did say 125mph. He was very upset when I told him despite this, his speedo lying to him.

Like the nob I used to work with who had a Civic turbo, I was impressed thinking VTEC plus aftermarket turbo kit, it was a basic L reg Civic, no turbo but despite him showing me it under the bonnet it was obvious that it didnt have one an he said of course you cant see it, its underneath.

Why do none car people try to brass it out with what it is obviously someone with vastly superior knowledge ?

i test drove a Corsa SRi (1.6 16v ECOTEC engine) about 5yrs ago..

the gent who was selling the car (a car salesman!) expressed how fantastic vauxhall were at perfectly the VTEC on this particular model and how the local vauxhall dealer had told the seller that this particular VTEC model was the quickest they had seen..

needless to say i didnt buy the car.

You shouldn't be bored, you should be revising for your GCSE's?

I don't have any stories of friends parents boasting about their cars and performance and getting it all wrong to be honest, none of them had particularly decent cars to begin with. However I do remember I was friends with a lad across the street from me and his Dad had a Skoda Estelle. We went to the circus in that one evening and the damn thing caught fire. With it being rear engined the smoke started to bellow through the back seats. I fondley remember trying to push the front seat forward and scrambling out.
