I've got an old knackered 1990 Ford escort, which has no tax or MOT (runs out this month), and has this week stopped running, probably because the starter motor has gone. Prior to this it did run but the auto box was utterly knackered.

I've seen adverts where they will collect a car for scrap (without paying for it), but I was wondering how much I had to gain if I got it to a scrappy. How much would they offer me? I appreciate no one wants parts from these cars any more so it would just be the metal that's useful really.

Cheers,
Matt

The price of steel (and therefore scrap) is on the way up - if you can park the car up for a month or so, it would be worth a punt.

I scrapped my '88 golf driver after a long list of problems finally caused it to stop running altogether, they came and collected it and gave me £50 for it, I also claimed back the tax for around £40 i think. I did however call around 10-15 breakers/car scrappys, before I found one that wanted my car. Its always sad scapping a car, but sometimes its the only logical option!

It's on its way down at the moment. A couple of weeks ago we were getting £140 for a car.

Ring round your local scrapies, ask mates locally as some scrapies may pay more if the seller had advertised the car as spares or repairs first.

Not a lot.

Farmers may use it on their fields, so they might pay you for it if you have a lot to offload so to speak.

Oh wait....you said 'scrap'!
