Changing the brakes on the Focus, is there any harm using Loctite? I've had a caliper bolt come loose before despite being torqued up properly, but how much of a pain will removing the bolt(s) be if I have used Loctite? (granted access is tight to begin with)

from my experiance, they are hard enough to come out to startwith, so i wouldn't wan't to try getting them out after locking them in.

Loctite works on the principle that the seal breaks when moderate pressure is applied, so you should not have any problem, however if the braking system is involved best to seek specialised advice.

If the caliper slides on said bolt, I'd be more inclined to do the opposite and copper grease the st out of it rather than go near Loctite. Binding calipers are a PITA!

Some bolts used to hold calipers onto the hub are stretch bolts. The reason they might loosen is because they are re-used instead of being replaced.

If bolts are the correct part, in good condition and torqued correctly there's usually no need to use any form of thread lock and it could cause bigger problems later as others have said.

I'd make sure everything is clean before re-assembly and check your torque wrench is working properly before doing anything else.

Loctite or a similar product on caliper to hub bolts is a must in my opinion, as for caliper sliders proper brake slider grease/red rubber grease is better to use than copper grease.

Which bolts do you mean?
The ones holding the caliper to the caliper mounting or the ones that retain the slide pins?

Loctite blue is OK to use I guess, in fact it makes it less likely for bolts to seize. Loctite red is massive overkill, and as others said caliper bolts are often stretch bolts which cannot be re-used.

If Ford dosen't say to use Loctite, then you using it will just be a band aid.
The bolt won't come lose if the parts are all OK & the job is done properly. e.g has the bolt been over torqued before ? is it the correct bolt ? threads ok ? copperease on the threads ? When was the torque wrench last calibrated ?

So true, many don't appreciate that there are different grades of Loctite.
Screw, nut, stud, bearing, for starters.
We, still, do not know to which bolts the OP refers.

In common usage yes, but you should really go by the No. as the colours are used for other strengths as well , e.g. green = 270 AND 648 which is VERY high strength.

Red = 222 ?
Blue = 243 ?
In common usage yes, but you should really go by the No. as the colours are used for other strengths as well , e.g. green = 270 AND 648 which is VERY high strength.
I do go buy the numbers - but was a little confused by the someone quoting the colours, as 222 is low strength, and 243 mid. For anything that is brake, suspension etc bolts, I use 243.

Yes your right,although 222 is more pink wink, maybe the red referred to is not 222 but another one that is high strength ?

Some manufacturers take the problem of which out by providing with, a set of pads, new slide pin bolts with thread locking compound on.
That seems a sensible approach.

I'm talking about the bolts that hold the carrier to the hub. I'll see how easy / hard they come out before using some loctite.

As a rule - if a bolt already has loctite on it, put some on when you refit. Most auto applications will use the blue version - 243 I think.
