Greatest distance for central locking to work
Discussion
this is potentially life saving information, imagine, if you will, that you are being pursued by gentleman of an unpleasant nature who wish to do you harm. When running at top speed, with a short central locking range you will arrive at the car before it has been unlocked. If you have a longer central locking range then you will be able to get in ok before the nasty men reach you.
Had a lexus previously and maybe 30 yards max. The 300 is great if you cant find it in a car park, you can literally walk in a circle aiming in all directions and locate the thing. It worked at least 80 yards away in a packed NEC car park, What a sad git I am testing out this daft accessory!
tip - if you point your key fob against your skull and look at your car you can extend the range massively. honest.
I didn't believe this either but like me you will all try this when you think no-one is looking! My car has a ridiculously short range but by doing the skull trick I can close it from a 100+ yards at least...
ETA - just beaten to it doh!

My lexus doors self locked after 1 minute of not being opened. This nonce caused me to have to smash a window as I put the keys in the boot, shur the boot, then the doors locked!! Had to open the boot from inside. Still no one seems to be topping my distance though? 105 yards on open ground.
Do they use different systems?
My Skoda (generic VAG plipper) had a decent range, but the Mazda's seems much greater than that (if you walk towards it, it can actually relock before you get there).
Previous cars had short to medium ranges, so is this something to do with different technologies for triggering the remote locking (eg Infra Red vs radio?)

The owners manual for my Volvo S40 warned not to unlock the car from too far away - ie NOT to test the range like we're talking about.
Reason is the key and receiver work on a rolling code system to stop grabbers finding the code. If you do it from too far away and the receiver only receives a partial signal from the key, it can render them out of syncronisation, and you won't be getting in the car anytime soon until it's recovered to a dealer and re-syncronised.
So bear that in mind!

SO Dangerous Mike, do you choose your victims on the range of their central locking and give up on the long range ones?

My Fathers XF is clever about this. The car auto unlocks as you get close to it, and you press a button on the handle to lock it when leaveing. However if the keycard is in the boot the boot pops open again when you shut it, likewise if say the keycard is in a jacket and you leave it on the seat when locking the car it will beep back at you to alert you it is in the car. Very clever.
