What car & van combo for 8K?

My friend is looking to get rid of his 04 Disco and replace it with either a small flat bed or panel van and a boring but semi decent car. As he has to tow his V8 powered Defender based racer about he has no real need for an 'exciting' car.
Being of the lanky variety and his need to undertake regular long distance journeys comfort, economy and reliabilty are a must, as is value for money. Interesting-ish would be nice but that is bottom of the priorities list.
So far I've suggested an Alfa 156 or Vauxhall Omega, both can be had for sensible money and whilst not the last word in bomb-proofness should be a fairly reliable proposition.
