Well my 207 gti let me down for the 1st time today, the clutch has gone. 43k its done and this is the 1st issue since I got it on 35k. I'm gutted as I need 2 tyres and discs and pads and I'm totaly skint.

Joking aside do you think this is a bit early for the clutch to fail?

Depends entirely on how it was driven in the 35k before it got to you I would say.

ETA: doesn't make it any easier to take though.

I didn't realise the 207 gti had a clutch. I thought you just lifted both feet off the road to change gear

Bit early, I'd have thought, unless it has a hard time, like doubling as a handbrake on hills.

My poxy Subaru lost 90% of its clutch life in one start, which wasn't all that aggressivefrown

There's not much to shed light on - if you are constantly slipping the clutch while waiting in a queue on a hill you will knacker the clutch. You can see them at the lights, their car rocking back and forth about two feet as they eagerly await the green light. Is it really that difficult to put the handbrake on and slip into neutral?

My 306 (Rallye) did 90K on first clutch, 80% motorway driving though.

All depends upon the use (abuse).

45-50k is about right imho .About the same as an MINI R56s , and i think they share the same clutch as well as engine and gearbox .

I've never had a clutch go in 25 years. Makes me cringe when I see people riding the clutch whilst stationary. frown

I have done a clutch in about 40K before.

It was on an 04 plate 2ltr Diesel Corrolla, and to be fair the clutch was never good from new.

Current new civic is on 45K and clutch is still A-OK.

Depends on car, quality of clutch and use really.

Is it the plate or the release bearing that's gone?

Hit the owners clubs for some bargain parts chap. You might even find someone to help you change the clutch. Could turn a huge bill into a not so huge bill.

As for pug clutches well my dads failed on his 307 in 12k. First clutch he's ever had fail in 200 years of driving so not driver error. Pugs are unfortunately still flying the flag for st French build quality frown

Hopefully not, my clutch is original @ 140k on the Primera, and my mother's T5 is original at 174k.

My old Seat Ibiza did 70k on it's 1st clutch, but it was my first car so what can I say...I didn't drive it smoothly biggrin
The BMW is on it's second at 125k, the first was changed at 120k.
Yours seems to have gone quite early, do you slip the clutch a lot and do lots of full bore starts?
