right guys,

will be changing the wheels on the E21 soon, and will be fitting 195/55R15 tyres to it. the car is my daily driver but want some tyres which are both pretty grippy, but also durable (15,000 miles minimum ideally)

the car only weighs 1010kilos with full tank of fuel and a passenger, and only 112bhp and RWD so it doesn't chew tyres like there's no tomorrow luckily. i've heard falken do some good tyres?

at the moment i've only got 165/80R13's on, with goodyears on the front (can't remember what's on the rear!) and both sets are not even half worn after about 15,000 miles!

cheers smile

I've got Bridgestone Turanza ER30s on my MX5, 195/50/15. They've done a trackday and over 8000 hard miles and still look new. Sod-all grip in the wet though. Toyo T1Rs are cheap but wear out quite quickly.

Had some Vredestein Sportrac 3s on my old MR2, very good tyre.

+1 for the Falkens

I've got 912's on the MX5 and there great.

Also managed to play off camskill and blackcircles for the best price on 4.

Falken / Kumho both decent performance and price.

Bridgestone ER30 I had on the front of my last Mondeo for 8000 miles and when I sold it they looked almost brand new. Like an earlier poster said though, they were rubbish in the wet, compared to the P6000's on it before..

+1 got them on the Jag which is heavier than your Beemer. My one complaint particularly relevant this winter is in the cold they take an age to warm up.

Just a quick thought, will the new wheel/tyre combo fit in the arches? 30mm width increase is quite a lot.

other people have done it on E21's yes

however, the car has been lowered so will be tight. if so, i'll be rolling the arches slightly to accomodate.

FWIW, these are the wheels going on it.....

what you think?

Mine seem to warm up quite quickly on the Griff wink

you like rusted up 13" steelies? hehe i don't like them, that pic doesn't show very well but where they had chrome inserts (had to remove them as they warped and were rattling!) they have left nasty rust marks on all 4 wheels. i also think 165mm wide tyres are pretty lethal in the wet.

i'll be keeping the originals in the garage just in case i want to go back, or if i ever sell the car, the new buyer might want it more original.

those wheels are off an E30 318is, just with BBS centre caps.

edit: you think these actually look better?

It's all down to personal choice, if you like them then that's all that matters smile If the steels are rusty then fair enough but personally I think that most times original looks better, whether it's wheels, paint or anything really. smile

Personally I'd refurb the steelies - it's a pleasantly original and un-messed with example of an increasingly rare car that will always look better as original.

as said, i will most definitely be keeping the original wheels, they will not be binned. just in case i decide i want them back or if i decide to sell the buyer wants original wheels.

the car has had a different suspension kit and fueling system (the original carburettor was ste) which some how bumped it up 22bhp and 15lb.ft of torque! (dyno tested) other than that, yes, it's standard with the must have 5 speed box.

the cars are rare because of rust hehe mechanically they would probably do another 30 years.

you guys have put doubt in my mind. i should have never posted them pics up hehe still think i'll do it though, 165mm tyres are scary in the wet!

Another recommendation for the Falken FK452s. I put four on my 156 and they're pretty decent - only £43 each too!
