Need a little help..

I will soon be doing around 120miles a day commuting (3/4times a week) and i dont want to use my current banger clio as its getting on a bit and i think 120miles a day is asking a lot for a £250 bargin car and i dont want to use one of my projects as its not worth piling on the mileage.

So with this in mind i need to look for a car for no more than £3000 that can cope with doing 120miles a day 3/4 times a week for up to 6months without any major reliability issues outside of tyres/servicing.

So let me know your thoughts ladies and gents - i am open to suggestions but i dont want to be spending a fortune on fuel where possible but am open to something that isnt going to numb my mind..

Cheers

Mike

I would say something with the 1.9 VAG lump in it. Bora/Golf/Leon should do the job well.

Yeah, and you find those for £3k where?

Mondeo TDDI.

That said, I was doing 110 miles a day in my 1.8 petrol Mondeo, which was cheaper to run than the diesel Lancer it replaced, factoring in servicing etc.

Run the clio until it dies, then change. 120 miles is not so far.

Fox - can you find me some examples of a diesel accord for under 3k? im at a loss?

Had thought about a 1.8 LX mondeo as will be cheaper to service but they only pull around 35mpg according to web - is that right?! I'd have thought on A140/A14/A12 they should do a bit more than that?

Basically its going to work out at 2400miles per month for 6 months (14,400miles) so im factoring in 2x oil service and 1x Set of tyres which should be about right

Just working back through the figures i may be better off getting week lodgings for Circa £300 a month and save the money on fuel really.. but i would prefer to drive!

Mine was doing 38-42mpg on my old commute (20% stop/start city followed by 80% 'making progress' on the motorway).

Currently doing mostly around town driving, a 1 mile commute, and a weekly A-road trip to my parents, it's doing 36mpg.

Tyres, if you get something decent will see 20k on the front and 40k on the back. I use Hankook Ventus Prime (£70 each fitted in the stock 205-55-16). They were the OE tyres on the car, and perform well, are quiet and are reasonably fuel efficient.

Servicing costs me £30 every 12500 miles, that's using EuroCarParts supplied Bosch oil and air filters and semi-synthetic 5W30 (usually Castrol Magnatec from ECP). Plugs are done every 3rd service, at £35 a set. Full set of front brakes (discs and pads) can be got for £50 for Mintex. I do my own servicing, takes less than an hour to do the service, and I'm not rushing myself.

The Mondeo is a nice driving car, the Quickclear windscreen is a godsend in the winter, and the heater starts working in half a mile on cold mornings.

A guy at work has just bought a 4k Passat TDI for a 600 miles weekly trip to scotland and he loves it, I can see why looks ok, comfy, plenty of toys, returns over 50mpg, with a big boot.

Possibly worth looking at these or an Octavia with the PD engine as they seem to last forever.

PD engines are more to service, when you factor in PD oil, cam belts, DMFs, etc.

Yes, they're generally reliable, much more than commonrail diesels, but I've been there done that, and they cost a clean fortune to service compared to a low-tech petrol like the Duratec.

You'll pay £30 for the 505.01 oil alone for the PD (£50 if it's 507.00 for the 2.0TDI PD).

Not actually looked at servicing costs, I do know that my 1.6 TDCI ford costs literally peanuts to keep going and in over 60,000 miles has never let me down or needed more than routine servicing and the cost of parts for that is around £40.

Vauxhall Omega 2.5 TD. A comfy barge but incredibly cheap to buy and it will do the miles.

Rover 25/45 MG ZR/ZS derv... Plenty of pulling power, cheap bargains to be had, diesel versions return good MPG, and as long as you let if warm up and cool down properly you wont have HGF. Make sure you know the history on HGF though and check the car thoroughly, other than that, you'll have some cheap motorway miles put onto an under rated car! biggrin I'll get my coat now
