My neighbour has just phoned to say my car has been clamped by the DVLA as it is parked on the road with no tax.

I fully accept it shouldn't have been but it is a very quiet cul-de-sac and I am trying to sell the car so put it on SORN and have no insurance for it. I don't drive it anymore. It's only been there a few days as I have nowhere else to put it.

I have to pay £100 within 24 hours and produce a valid tax disc or pay £160 surety that i'll get back when I tax it within 2 weeks.

It has a valid MOT so it looks like the only way to get it back is to take out insurance and buy a tax disc which I can then refund straight away. The car will, of course, be moved off the road.

Any advice on the cheapest way to get temporary insurance that can be used to tax it? I assume the likes of Tempcover can't be used to tax a car??

Is it possible to take out a 12 month policy and cancel after a month?

When did the tax run out?
Insurance may charge an admin fee.

Tax is the least of your problems if the Police find it on the highway with no insurance.

Tax ran out at the end of March. It has been sat in my off road parking space but the arrival of a new untaxed project meant moving it onto the road. To be honest I chanced it thinking the worst that would happen is a council sticker asking me to move it.

I won't be doing it again!!

Guess I need to work out if the cost of taking out insurance & cancelling it plus the one month lost refund of the tax disc is greater than the £160 surety.

For example an online quote for insurance is £585 for 10 months so I just need to know how much it will cost to cancel straight away.

I assume if I pay the surety then don't tax the car they just keep my money??

Either you're the worlds unluckiest person, someone from the DVLA lives near you or someone doesn't like you.

Either way this thread as reminded me to put my latest tax disc on the track car before i next use it!

You can take out a policy but they normally charge a month or twos premium if cancelled within a year

Make your mind up. Have you got anywhere else to put it or not? Why not just buy 6 months tax, insure it, sell it and then cancel the insurance. Covered against theft then as well. If you insure it to get a tax disc and then can cel you're heading for all sorts of potential trouble: uninsured test drives etc.

You have 14 days cooling off with the Insurance anyway don't you? Get cover note, Tax, send cert back saying you don't want it. Only the months lost road tax then.

Not that I condone that sort of thing....

Don't all insurance policies come with a 14 day cooling off period where they can't charge you if you change your mind?

What 26 days later? I think they give you 14 days 'grace' then you are fair game. Having said that as above somebody has almost certainly shopped the op.

My neighbour said they drove down the cul-de-sac in a DVLA van with what I assume is ANPR cameras mounted on the roof. My car must have flagged up, so they jumped out and clamped it.

I've had the car over a year so I would have thought most of the neighbours would know it's mine. Seems a bit harsh to shop me.

To be honest I think I just got unlucky. It's my own fault so not looking for sympathy, just the cheapest way to sort it!

I can call in a favour and find somewhere else to put it until it sells. It won't need to be driven to get there either. I appreciate what you're saying about test drives though and think insuring until sold may be the best thing to do.

Bloody thing has cost me a fortune lately so just loathe spending anymore on it!!

Thanks for all the replies.

It's the way that society is going. In the past the local bobby would have called round and said if that's still there tomorrow...

Remember to put 'new tax disc' in your ad and good luck.
