Are we likely to see fuel protests as we did a few years back?

I know there are a couple of threads already running about fuel prices but what I want to know what will it take for people to sit up and protest like they did a few years ago.

At what price does fuel have to get to before people say 'enough is enough'?

£1.50 is the next psychological barrier. Failing that, £2.00 yikes

Not sure it will happen though, people seem to have had the spirit knocked out of them over the past few years.

Why? Anti-terror laws?

I'm sure if it was organised shedloads would turn up.

Fuel prices are so high now, a few people I know are considering packing in their day jobs and going on benefits. Its costing more to get to work than it is to stay at home!

This.

If there was a catalyst, a figure or group for people to rally round and really get the masses fired up then i think it would happen. However being British people just wont stand up and do this, we'll just carry on bending over and grumbling down the pub/on PH wink

multi billion nay £trillion black hole in the uk's finances cant see a reduction happening can you?

not to mention the potential impending inflation the government would like to see to wipe out some of its debts.

ironicly a big chunk off the price such a 10p etc would instantly make every uk business more profitable less go out of business keep jobs increase money in your pocket to spend and thus more disposible income to pay down our debts or spending power to stimulate the economy. neglible ammounts of increase in traffic as petrol is a inelastic good anyway..

however this approach is the same of the government saying use public transport and we'll spend to money to upgrade it. and we are saying upgrade it THEN we will use it....

IIRC its now illegal to blockade a fuel depot, which as we all know is what made the protests in 2000 work

Ok then, why don't YOU stand up and do it? Or would you rather grumble about it?

Can't afford a mass protest, cost too much in fuel to get there tongue out

seriously though I am surprised there hasn't been further disquiet but I think people have just been depressed by the recession and just don feel they can do anything about the economy so just accept it. My costs of commute have gone up by 1/4 in recent months to a point where I'm looking at other jobs closer to home

Thats it in a nutshell. You all gave that up years ago. But thats alright, your house was going up in value at the time, and you had a credit card to splurge on. That nice Mr Blair.

Now, we, as a country, are screwed.

The price of fuel sickens me, although it would do some good. People should find jobs nearer to home- too many people commute silly miles. Which is why there is no family time anymore.
I think we should all have V6-v12 cars for use of less than 200 miles a week say. And walk or cycle to work.

This is depressing; soon there will strict censorship which is widespread like in China, so we best watch what we say on here.

Right I off to make one of these AFDB to protect my self nuts

You just need to start small.. How about getting a group of cars to do a lap of the M25 at 20mph using all three or more lanes? Tell the press you are doing it and i'm sure someone would take note. Cover the cars in banners etc.

Would make one hell of a monster tail back.

Out of interest, how legal would it be to do that? Surely not breaking any laws by driving slow?

I agree. Nail on the head. Blair + Brown created the illusion of wealth and growth while the only growing thing in the UK economy was the amount of debt, both public and personal. But that's ok for the British bovine public, since their perceived house value was increasing and they could take on more debt (MEW) to buy that new shiny A4 with dhead lights.

yup anti-terror laws and clampdowns on protest

Apparently anything that might inconvenience the government (I.E your former right as a citizen to protest) will now result in you going to jail.

We have given up so much under this government

erm how old are you? id love to have bought a house nearer my work however id have paid twice as much as i paid for my current place.

i ask your age because in the uk now "when" you bought a house makes a bigger difference to your general disposable income and standard of living more than the job you do.

this topic however is too large for one thread.. infact there are entire wesites dedicated to it.
