In the army? Well why didn't you say so? Heavens, we shouldn't be giving a squaddy any points at all. A fine you say? We should be giving HIM money and thinking ourselves very lucky that this young man is choosing British roads to speed on.

He should be awarded the military cross and given a lifetime of free chips at Little Chef.

it's not obvious from the title, but I'd read it earlier.

Nice to see a judge applying common sense for once.

Frankly, given that the lad is prepared to die for his country, he should be given a Royal pardon.

I can get on board with this.

If it's safe for the Germans...

I got caught doing 120 on the M4 5 years ago. It was 3 days before I got sent to the Gulf & decidied to take the car for one last jolly before tucking her away in bed.

The Policeman told me he would wait 4 months to submit the offence upon my return to the UK.
He said it would be pointless punishing me when I wouldn't be driving a car for that time anyway & wanted me to learn my lesson.

I didn't get a ban, I attended court with a witness statement & appologised for wasting the Court's time etc, etc.

I landed 6 points + a heavy fine.

Being caught doing over 100mph doesn't always equal a driving ban. I reckon he would have landed a very big fine.

Where does it say he was going out there to diffuse IEDs? It says he was going into the REME so me might just as easily be a trainee spanner counter.

Tell you what then, 'Manks': why don't you go out there instead?

Sounds like a right laugh.

I wouldn't do it - but it is his job - he's chosen to do it. Since when did being in a dangerous job mean you get different treatment for speeding?

Since he decided to defend his country, so that you and I can sleep easy at night without being blown up.

Well since the 27th of April apparently.

As you succinctly point out, there seems to be an expectation by some members of the forces and general public that because there is a war on the military should be treated differently.

A friend of mine was on reserve (I think the term is) when there was a war going on in the 90s. He told me that if he'd been called up he would have broken his own leg. "I didn't join the army to go to war" he added without a hint of irony.

The forces are doing a good job in the face of some serious challenges and they deserve some respect for that. But they don't deserve to be treated differently by the law.

Have the Taliban started hiding IEDs in bedside cabinets then?

Judge said:
Judge Marten Coates told him:"You richly deserve to be disqualified because of this appalling behaviour on the motorway, which is what I was going to do."

He said imposing a driving ban would prevent Mr Edmondson from being able to train for his military role in Afghanistan.

"It is a matter of balancing two different public interests, and the saving of lives must be the more important.

"I must allow you to remain in the role you do, which is essential for our armed forces."
Hope that clears it up for you.

You'd be even more pissed off that a fully fit Soldier was on remedial duties in the UK instead of being sent out to Afghanistan doing his job. Not dicking another poor lad to go out in his place & not a drain on the defence budget.

Bigger picture & all that wink
