Should Drink Driving Campagners.....?
Discussion
HI,
I've just changed jobs and now take the train to work. Given that I won't be driving more than about 20 miles a week, I've decided to SORN my own vehicle and suspend my insurance. I can use the wife's car on the odd occasion that I need to.
This lead me to read through the small print of my insurance policy.
It informs me that if I'm convicted of drunk driving following an accident, my cover will be limited to minimum legal requirments. AND the insurance company will recover any losses it incurs from me personally.
I had wondered about this previously, as the decision to drive, like the decision to drink is a conscious one.
This means a night out and an ill judged decision could prove very expensive indeed.
Moreover, if your driving home over just over the limit and get hit by someone else thats blind drunk, you'll not only end up losing your own licence but also out of pocket for your damages. Even if the accident wasn't your fault!
In other words, the insurers position is, Don't expect us to pick up the tab.
Its your $#%t. You deal with it.
Question, Should drink driving campagners highlight this situation as a fresh angle in terms of education and stigmatisation, as well as a scare tactic in the interests of road safety as many people probably aren't aware of it.
