My tax disc hasn't arrived in the post yet and it runs out tonight. I need to drive it tonight somewhere and I won't be home until sunday, but of course I'll have the out of date tax disc on my car. Will I get a slap on the wrist for failure to display if I'm stopped? I keep hearing about a 14 day grace period, is that true?

Taxed online, you should be ok for 5 days. There should be more info on DVLA website.

From the DVLA:

"If you intend to renew your vehicle tax you should do so before your current tax disc expires. However, this isn’t always possible if you are waiting for insurance or getting an MOT for your vehicle.

You’ll be committing an offence if you use or keep your vehicle on the public road without a current tax disc. If you can’t get a tax disc, you must remove your vehicle off the road.

You’ll have 14 days to get a tax disc or make a SORN, while your vehicle is off the road."

I beleive there is some confusion with the 14 day grace period. That only applies if it's off the road.

The law states you must display a valid tax disc at all times your car is on the road.

It's utterly ridiculous, but them's the facts.

yes

The DVLA takes a while to gurd its loins and strut its stuff (hence the 14 day thing) but the police can do you fromt he moment the old one expires if they so choose. If you come across one who's actually human you could probably plead the 14 day rule, but I wouldn't bank on it. I think traffic wardens can (and therefore will) report you too?

you will have a reciept from dvla, take that with you and if you do get stopped show it to whoever stopped you that should be enough. the car is taxed after all.

This is also from the Dvla website and relevant to your situation. Only changed last year I believe.

I have not received the tax disc. Can I use the vehicle without the tax disc displayed?

When you apply for a tax disc online or by using our phone service you are able to legally continue to drive your vehicle for up to 5 days after the tax disc has expired while you wait for the new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply when you have applied for a new tax disc before the current one expires. You should continue to display the expired disc on your vehicle, until the new one arrives.

That's what I was thinking of, but was posting from phone at the time so couldn't do a proper search & link.
Hopefully ANPR will be updated so you don't get pulled. Still worth printing off a copy of the email they sent you.
