chris harris tests the "last of the old skool 911 " against the "synthetic sounding 458"... great footage on UK roads

Good video thumbup

For me, it'd have to be the GT3 RS. I can see the appeal of the Ferrari but in my very honest opinion it doesnt have a meaty sound, looks foul and has the wrong type of gearbox.

The 911 on the other hand sounds incredible and from what I've heard in all these reviews, it's full of feel.

The Ferrari comes across as a manhood extension for rich, talentless posers whereas the Porsche comes across as the choice for people who can really drive a raw performance car.

Thanks for those pearls of wisdom.

And exactly how much time have you spent behind the wheel of either a Porsche or a Ferrari to achieve these staggering insights?

Am I not allowed to have an opinion on a car I've not driven? That's how I view the two cars. You dont have to agree with me.

How many cars have you commented on that you've not driven? Ahhh...just as I thought.

ETA

I just checked your garage and it seems I must have offended you. As I'm sure you noticed, my post stated "the Ferrari", not all Ferraris.

I think it depends on the type and gravity of the comment one's making. Claiming that a car is a "manhood extension for rich, talentless posers" is a pretty harsh comment, and as such would need to be backed up with some pretty detailed explanation to avoid making yourself sound like a complete cock. biggrin

Fair enough. Appologies if my comment truely offends anyone. I just see the 458 as a numbers exercise, but I can see the appeal of it in some respects. I simply prefer the ethos of the Porsche.

It's ok, I wasn't offended by it (I'm not a Ferrari owner!), I just thought it was a bit brash, especially with no justification. You're probably right about most Ferrari owners actually (non Scuderia of course), and maybe most 911 owners too (non GT3 of course), but it's a different thing to claim that the cars are designed exclusively for people like that. At a lower budget, for example, word has it that BMWs are driven by arrogant idiots and Audis are driven by cocks, but having driven many examples of both marques I'm not sure I see any link at all between the product and this misguided image that they both have - both car companies just spend a lot of money designing a car to perform a particular purpose and then sell them to anyone who can write a big enough cheque.

My comment (which was brash - its been a long day) was based on how each car comes across to me. I've never stated that they were designed exclusively for people like that and I'm not following any sterotypes with my comment as far as I'm concerned.

If I'm ever lucky enough to drive an example of either car I'm sure I would be more than impressed with both but at the end of the day, that is a very slim possibility. If I could only drive one of them, I'd grab the keys for the GT3 RS smile

I like the GT3 RS a lot but it's no contest for me, I'd take the Ferrari. It's just another league above the Porsche (as is its price)

The Ferrari equivalent of the GT3RS is not out yet.

Interesting comparison though.

Fantastic nonsense Rob! We've been here before haven't we?

Now, forgive me for paraphrasing but it appears that your gist in this paragraph is this:

Sweeping generalisations about the owners of cars you don't drive, eg Ferrari = small-cocked talentless posers, are 'probably' right, and Porsche = good drivers, are 'maybe' right.

However, sweeping generalisations about cars you do drive eg Audi = cocks etc are simply misguided.

Did I misunderstand?

Yes, that's totally not what I meant, although I think I made my point badly!!

"I just remembered that I own a Ferrari..."

I sometimes forget where I leave my door keys, or whether I bought enough milk or not. I generally don't forget that I own a Ferrari...

It seems that to the enthusiast the RS is the easier car to love. That engine sounds truly brilliant, and it has a wonderfully poised stance as it powers out of the corners. But the 458 seems like such a weapon. It looks so wieldy and punchy, and its hard to believe it is packing 560 horses. I really can't wait to see the Scuderia version (or whatever they decide to name it).

Great to see Evo starting to put together some half decent videos, Harris is a real asset to the magazine. Now all they need is regular 'video column' for him, that would be ace smile.

yes Good point, which addresses many criticisms of the comparison and the cars on this thread.

Bear in mind it has a 7 speed double clutch gearbox.

Yes but I'd prefer to enjoy the sound a bit longer.

Just nitpicking.
