I have been considering investing in one for the next winter. My Z4 is a daily driver..

But is it worth the £1k layout??

The car warms up nicely without and seemed more than fine in the crap weather we have had this winter.

Anyone invested in one? do you even bother to use it? The £1k could otherwise be used to buy a set of wheels wrapped with winter tyres...The car was a suicidal weapon!!!

Depends how hardy you are and how oftn you have the roof down. I did have one on the 911 but never used it much. I don't use the car much in winter though...

Roof is down a lot, the car has heated seats and warms up very quick.

Just seems like something else to dump in the garage.

I bought one for the MX5. Put it on about November last year and have only just taken it off last week. Made motorway journeys a lot nicer but I would not say it is completely neccessary. If it was over £500 I probably wouldn't have got it. For your Z4 with its greater refinement over the '5, I would say don't bother.
There is also the problem of where to put it. Being in a flat without a garage it is currently acting as a ugly piece of decoration in the lounge. It's surprisingly large off the car than what it looks like on the car.

Hard tops for soft tops are just a pain in the ass, where do you store it in the summer and if its a nice day in winter you wont bother to take it off. I have learned by my mistake's

I have a hard top for my Elise (which is my daily driver). I used it for the first winter I had it, and it's been languishing in the garage ever since. Don't see the point really.

bought a hardtop for mine, VX220 Turbo ran around in it for few weekends. Drove to work and it all cleared up wanted to go home roof off, which wasn't possible. took it off when I got home.

Never went back on the car, sold it to a guy into his track days better protection on stone chips.

Likewise, although to be fair it is garaged so never gets damp.
Mine's garaged too, used as a daily driver. There's usually a quite few people who have a hardtop & advocate the use of it. As I said my personal choice is to stick with the softtop & so be able to drop the roof when I want to all year round.

I didn't buy my car new so didn't fork out £1k on my hardtop but looked specifically for one when I bought my car.

I'm sure a Z4 is much more refined than my MR2 (hood wise) but I wouldn't be without it. It makes my car very coupe like and much quieter, warmer, better handling and very well suited to winter driving. Once the weather warms up it goes straight in the garage.

To be honest I'd never drive with the top down in the winter as I'm pretty soft and don't find a cold breeze much fun. Thus my hard top is on from about November through to late Feb.

I guess it's down to personal preference and find it interesting that a lot of peeps don't rate them.

Incidentally I also have a spare set of wheels for the winter and they've never been on. To be fair the MR2 has been fantastic this winter and safe as houses but even still the logistics of changing all four wheels meant that I really couldn't be arsed. For me they've been an expensive waste of time frown

The £1k wouldn't be lost though, you could simply sell the hardtop on again if you didn't use it much. Good time of year to buy one I guess.

Haven't bothered with one myself, I actually had the roof down quite a lot this winter so a hard top would've just annoyed me whenever I'd have wanted to drop the roof. Kept the car in the garage during the worst of the weather.

My MX5 Anniversary had a hard top when I bought it. Sold it within a week for £700.

Waste of time (especially if the soft top has a heated window) and just a waste of space in the garage during the summer.
