This annoys me.

Was going through Aberdeen today when I saw this,

Car in the black is travelling about 25mph (30 zone), it's a fairly busy junction.
Car travelling the opposite way is approaching and signalling to turn right at the junction, car in the red is travelling closely behind the black car.
When out of nothing, pulls out into the filter lane, and overtakes the black car. (As shown by red arrows).
Now this really annoys me, as not only is it pointless and stupid, as he has to stop at a busy set of traffic lights about 100 yards down the road, but it is also putting him, and other motorists in danger.

Absolutely NO need for it, it's dangerous, and downright stupid.

Sorry, had to get that out, really annoys me.

Were you in the black car? It seems like a pretty normal overtake to me.

Slightly unclear on one point...

Was the oncoming car in the filter lane, or just approaching it? Did the red car cause it to take avoiding action? Its a question of degree - was he being stupid (i.e. he ought not to overtake in the filter lane, as its unwise, even if not illegal) or dangerous.

No, we were just a little behind the red one before it overtook.

The oncoming car was just about to pull into the filter lane.

I just find it stupid as it could have put people in danger and he got nowhere as he had to stop at the lights 100 yards down the road.

I'm amazed at how little patience some people have. Got overtaken in a similar manner to that a while back in a 30 while driving at 30. Guy just swung past and went fleeing up the road. Most noticeably: People tailgating learner cars, blatantly ignoring red lights, driving through city roads at 50+, just plain stupid

i've had those problem many times, when i coming to the filter lane and indercating to go in there, cars are overtaking trucks coming at me, its fking rediculous espeacillay when there are double solid white lines there to stop this.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating the manoeuvre, I think its symptomatic of a failure to plan more than five seconds ahead, but in the example above (which is fairly typical of road markings) there is no breach of a solid white line, therefore its not illegal.

He did cross the hatchings. The filter lane wasn't long enough to overtake.

Sorry, bad drawing. paperbag

None of that is illegal, as far as I know.

You're a credit to PH with that style of driving. Who the fk drives at 30 and then gets upset with others?

Was this the Stoneywood Rd/ Greenburn Dr juction in Aberdeen? We had a tt do that at this juction yesteday. If it was then myself and the OH were in the car turning right. The OH is not long out of hospital and thought she was going back sooner than she thought!

You see what you should have done at this point was to put your foot down and pushed the overtaker into the verge. Much better.

The legality seems pretty questionable to me, since when is it okay to over take past a road junction?

Someone who likes to keep a clean license?

I agree with the OP, that was a stupid move. Could have been almost "acceptable" had there not been any oncoming traffic, but with oncoming traffic which is even signalling to turn right, it was stupid. I think that kind of overtake is simply stupid anyway, because the car turning in could change it's mind (say they are looking for a road) and carried on.

Seeing as this has turned into a guessing game, I'm gonna say the Kingswells-Airport road where the junction turns off into the housing estate (wide road, downhill, can see pretty far ahead; plenty of potential for knobhead overtakers).

Someone who isn't a complete bellend and knows what a 30mph zone is for? Clearly R1 Loon you have no idea what a 30 is for.
