Diseasal tuning
Discussion
My dad is one of these caravaner types who likes to go to eruope on caravan holidays. (caravans...yes I kinow!)
He is a member of the caravan club and in their magazine he was asking me about the below company's advert for a plug-in power increase for his 2.5L Discovery turbo-diseasal.
http://www.energytuning.co.uk/
My reaction is that it is just another 'magic' ecu trick box that doesn't really do anything.
But am I right?
Does anybody have any experience of such a 'plug-in' device, or is it just all 'word of mouth' reports?
Cheers.

Iv heard about these kind of diesel tuning boxes on another forum, people seamed impressed with them (they were for the 1.7cdti and 1.9cdti GM engines)

Alot of turbo-diseasal engines can be remapped just like turbo-petrol engines can, to get pretty decent power increases.
Just interrogate Google
Yes, I was aware of this, but mapping an engine for one purpose compromises on another.Just interrogate Google

Map for more power and it usually means the engine requires more fuel and air in the cylinders....which means lower fuel economy.
The above 'magic' box states that it does both.
I am just wondering if there was a map available that increases power/torque and also economy then why didn't the manufacturer put this map onto the ECU from the factory?
By uprating the power- and more importantly the torque- driven normally the engine shouldnt have to work as hard to get upto speed and less gearchanges would be needed.
The manufacturer would map the car safely so it can offer a warranty and a reliable product.
An engine producing more power would probably wear quicker, particularly if driven hard.

Ive got a tuning box on my focus and the most noticable thing is the torque curve, better mpg and thats been on for over 30k miles now. No problems no extra smoke and easier to tow stuff, so as for your dads needs its a cheaper way for easier towing.
OK...well I might be being too negative with regards to this tuning box.Would you say its money well spent?
If, so I think I'll tell my dad next time I see him that it might be a good buy.
the magic box just pumps in more diesel.
the reason why manufacturers don't go for full power maps is because a) they are often aiming for a certain power output, if you change the manufacturers bhp into kW, you'll probably see it lands on a nice round number.
b) they often aim for a certain emissions level, but once the car is out on the road in private hands, you don't need to stick to it as rigorously as the manufacturers do

HTH Garry
try http://www.diesel-performance.co.uk/ , call up and talk to andrew. Fantastic bloke, fantastic company, brilliant products. Used one for 40k miles.
Call him tell him what car you have and he will give you all the options. If you are nearby he will even let you try before you buy.
