So, the old dear is after a Ford Focus. Found two reasonable examples, first one is last shape, 1.6 litre, 17k and around £5-6000. Second is latest shape, 1.4 litre, 35k and £6000.

Thoughts? I like the look of the older model here to be honest. I feel the 1.4 will be a bit undepowered and what else did Ford change in the update? Was it mainly cosmetic?

Cheers guys.

Cosmetic changes, more of a facelift than a new version. The 1.4 is frankly, crap. slow, sluggish and not really worth it. The 1.6 is amazingly frugal (For a 1.6 anyway) but if speed isn't an issue, the deciding factor is really going to be down to looks and price.

Just to help her, what car taxation brackets do they come into? (If that is an issue).

Personally, I'd go the the 1.6. Although seeing as we are talking about women here, she might want the newer shape one, even though it'd be crap in 1.4 guise.

Isn't foci the plural of focus?

Although in your example (if you wanted to be a true latin grammar nazi) you would need to use the ablative case which would then be focis.
