Hit a pothole today. Tyre immediately deflated but I couldn't see any immediate damage. Until I removed the wheel:

I will be trying to claim from the council but is there any way the wheel can be repaired? Or, as I suspect, is it now scrap?

Thanks

I really do not know, but...

Would you be happy if it was repaired, new rubber and you were buzzing down the motorway with the family in the car? I wouldn't.

Claim from council, scrap or sell this one.

I had very similar damage to a wheel of mine;

I scrapped the wheel and claimed for a new one plus two tyres (>£400) from the council. They paid up in the end but not after a bit of wrangling.

Alpina wheel? i bought a set that had been heat straightened, which was heating it with a blow torch and then jacking back with a bottle jack in the middle but it left it a little flat along one side, rather than fully round.

I absolutely wouldn't repair unless the end result would be as safe as a new one.

Yes, E39 B10. That doesn't sound good. I think I'm resigning myself to the fact that it's knackered....

It might be repairable by these kind of people:

http://www.reinventingthewheel.co.uk/

Worth sending them a pic and asking, perhaps.

OTOH, I think some damage to alloys tends to be rather terminal, and not safely repairable.

And you would be able to confirm this how? I certainly wouldn't take the repairer's word. Vested interest

Easier and safer to walk away, and claim from council

I recently had my pothole-damaged alloy wheel repaired by these guys and would thoroughly recommend them. Admittedly mine wasn't quite as badly damaged as the OP's, (see picture below), but they were able to make it circular again and guarantee the work.

I see you are based in Oxfordshire so you aren't too far from Lepsons in Swindon http://www.lepsons.co.uk

They've just done a wonderful job refurbing my 20 spoke Buchloe classics - admittedly without the need for any straightening - but they talk about "straightening wheels after hitting potholes" on their website and I saw several rather unround wheels when I was down there which they were extremely confident of restoring to good as new.

It would be well worth your while discussing it with them and then deciding whether to chase the council for £750 for a new wheel and tyre or getting them to pay the £75 or so that Lepsons will charge to make your existing one round and shiny again.

If you do decide to go down the Lepsons route then be aware that members of The Alpina Register http://www.thealpinaregister.com (which I know that you are) get a good discount at the Swindon branch of Lepsons. It might even tempt you to get all four refurbed at the same time - not that I'm on any commission at all - which would still cost the council less than half the price of a new wheel and tyre...
