Hi all,

Sounds like a funny question but i noticed some modern white cars have a lot more sheen and gloss to them.

Is this simply because the paint is newer and better prepared OR is it down to fancy new paint?

My white 1990 MX5 is about three different shades and the paint has literally started falling off so i've got the car booked in next week for a re-paint.

I don't really like 'warm' shades of white, Looking for something really nice and crisp.

Any idea's?

Thanks,

Rick.

VW Candy white is nice - not as warm as BMW Alpine white.

Generally I think a very small amount of 'warmth' is best as with none the white can look a bit grey and cheap - almost like it's a very thin single coat (like some of the whites used on vans).

Ford Diamond White is a cracking colour, quite old though.

I know you probably wouldnt anyway... but don't even think of pearl white!!

I think it was more popular in the late 90's, but geessss I hated them!! Never looked good, never looked clean:

Depends if you want it to look 'stock' or 'bit modified'. if the latter isn;t a problem I would go for that 'is it white? is it very pale silver' that you can get nissan qashqais in - that would look really cool with some satin black wheels...

I'm waiting for Bradz to come along to tell us all about his (Audi) Ibis White cars- he's had a Cayenne and M3 done IIRC.

Alternatively, ask Chris Evans- he knows a thing or two about resprays in white. HTH!

new whites have a lot of blue in them i believe, whereas the older stuff had yellows in which made them warmer - I much prefer the stark whiteness of the "blued" whites of modern cars.

not so max power.

but as you say you want a normal solid white. so yes it has to be one of the audi/bmw ones rather than a creamy one.

Currently have just been throug the dilemma with the Porsche 944. It is Alpine white which is a dirty/creamy white. I wanted something a lot brighter & have ended up with Rustoleum Bright White which is RAL 9012. I'll respray it myself & the Rustoleum seems to be a great solution.

The reason that modern white cars look so shiny is that most of them, even flat colours have a laquer over them.
