...Everything was fine, once the MR2 sold, it was 190E time, that was 100% what I was going to get.

Then I was just messing about getting a quote on a 1988 Saab 900 2.0 Turbo, and bam, £500 insurance with a company specialising in cars over 15 years old. I've never been quoted insurance that cheap before. A Micra costs me more than that with any other insurance company.

So I rang them up to confirm that it was the case, and it was right. So now, having checked with a few other cars over 15 years old it seems I can get very, very, good quotes with them.

So now my question for you PH, what car?

Over 15 years old.
Under a grand to buy.
Faster is preferable but happy to substitute this for cool factor.
Convertibles/Coupes/Saloons/Estates all welcome

Cheers,
J.

ETA: The insurance seems to favour cars over 20 years old even more so anything pre 90's would be the best.

Sorry not answering your question exactly - (and I have know idea of your age / situation that may impact on insurance) But I would still only expect to pay a half of what they quoted you on a group 11 - 13 car!

Keep ringing round I'd say.

Rover Tomcat. Get a decent one for around a grand if you shop around and haggle(Avoid the 'FDH' reg ones as they fetch silly money) then you will have a car which is impreza-quick!

Quick question, as when my current policy runs out in a few months time, I'll be in the same position as you - which company is this saab quote with? I'm likely to be looking for an older car myself (and currently drive a 1992), so it'd be useful to know.

Sure, it's Lancaster Insurance.

Impreza sport maybe. Even the early Turbo ones would trounce a Tomcat.

How about a Corrado 16v? They sometimes crop up for under a grand.

A batch of late rover coupe turbos all had registrations ending FDH I believe it was some that rover had forgotten about and I think there a N reg could be wrong I am sure I will be corrected.

The FDH reg cars were Jap-spec cars destined for the Jap market and were top spec(aircon, leather etc) but "dissappeared" after failing to meet the jap emmisions then were sold to Rover employee's at a reduced rate due to the newer mk2 shapes being released. The only difference is that the flare gun's were removed but the extinguishers and other Jap-spec bits were left on the cars when they were sold.
There isn't any performance difference and the main reason an FDH is so sought-after is due to them being in better condition and lower milage than smilar aged tomcats.

Cheers for suggestions so far, the insurance seems a little picky though.

The cheapest I can get for the Corrado/Golf GTis is above a grand but I can get a Synchro insured for £500.

Also, probably should have mentioned, my Dad is dead set against me having a French car and it's not worth the hassle of trying to argue with him about it so no fun French hatches please, not that I'm happy about having to say that.

Any leftfield suggestions that the insurance companies haven't caught on to yet?

i don't think this is the sort of car you want, but, the primera GT and eGT are good cars for being dirt cheap and having even better insurance. they fall nicely into that "people think they're much ster than the they are because they're actually good" category.

They arent flare guns; theyre warning flares - similar to a roman candle. You strike the end and drop them on the floor, where they will burn for a good while emitting a bright red light: like a warning triangle, but more fun. Theyre similar to the kit used by American police officers to draw stupid American drivers attention to traffic accidents.
