I never thought I'd say this but I'm giving serious thought to buying either a C30 or XC60. Both seem to have what it takes in the looks department & perform competitively, but at the ed of the day does it stil make me a "Geography Teacher" or is it me that's out of touch?

No. Depending on what you want, they are a lot better in some ways than say a BMW.

I have a V40 as a runabout at the moment and it is a brilliant car smile.

Very impressed with its overall driving characteristics and I am now a bit of a Volvo fan.

I have no idea "what it takes" in the looks department, and if you're that worried about looks then spending tens of thousands on a car is a bit silly when designer clothes and makeovers cost just hundreds wink However, Volvo build solid, safe and reliable cars, so I don't think you're mad at all smile I'm actually considering a V70/V40 as a third car at the moment for carrying stuff around in.

We've got a C30 2.0d and really like it. Unfortunately it's going soon as we're expecting a child so need something with rear doors... so a V50 it is.

The C30 isn't the ultimate in driving but it isn't bad at all, the interior is great, the styling good and I much prefer it to the Focus/A3/1-Series for driving and the whole ownership experience.

good cars... had no issues with mine when I had it.

Mechanic was always glowing over them, although if they are that good I don't know why he didn't just buy one himself (drove a vauxhall corsa diesel)

There was a good S70 went for £510 on ebay today. 86k miles, full years MOT. I was so tempted even just as a second car to use for the summer.

EDIT - here it is

History and a new timing belt , seems a bargin redface

Interesting choice as they are pretty well at opposite ends of the Volvo spectrum. Can I ask why you've homed in on those two models?

My parents are getting a C30 - after the test drive i was seriously impressed (i'm 22). heads up though, Volvo are releasing new diesel engines (called the D3 + D4 this summer which are more torquey and more powerful + are also going to 5-pot from the current 4-pots).

As mentioned earlier, great cars smile

Does anyone know whether Volvo's switch to Ford platforms has affected reliability and the general feeling of solidity?

Off topic, but we cope with Swamp Jr (9 months) in our car and no rear doors. Soon he'll get a forward-facing seat, and that should be even easier. I was going to rush out and do the family estate thing, but very glad I didn't bother.
