Since you're 17, your biggest cost will be insurance.

Check out which cars are cheapest to insure, from that take a list and then go from there to ascertain which is best.

There are plenty of good (and bad) small cars, some will be cheap to insure, some won't despite them all being similar.

I would suspect something like a Micra would be cheap to insure, cheap to run and reliable.

Your looking in the right areas.. Go on Autotrader website, type in your budget and choose hatchback or the like, you'll find some things that you wouldn't normally think of.

Please insure it properly though, I've got my brother (17) telling me that I've been insuring my car wrongly and that I should have been froting, silly boy rolleyes

Yeah i think thats what has been my biggest issue, the insurance. Down to the fact i am 17 and first time driver.

My bf looked at a fiesta other night for me and the insurance with just me on there was up to £3000 and NO way am i paying that. Its pretty stupid lol. But then it went down with his name on it.

So wud it be wise to have him on the insurance aswell, or just find a cheaper car with just me on it.

Think of it for the insurers..

Mostly commonly crashed cars at this age;

Corsa
Fiesta
Saxo
Punto

So they put insurance up on them.. Try and think outside of those vehicles smile

women are safer drivers and have less accidents than men, hence their premiums are lower!

Females are generally considered lower risk by insurance companies.
At some point you will be asked to post a pic of yourself. (not by insurance co)
As Jonny points out it may be worth considering other/more unusual cars.

Well as a first car, you'll be looking for something with not a massive engine size, and so MPG shouldn't be too bad for you.. I'd look at things that won't go wrong all the time (This isn't always easy to tell though, hey!).

A first car can be a banger, until the next year, when you've saved up and have some No Claims Bonus, then you can get something better, and so on smile

Fiesta. Cheap to buy, nice to drive and hardly ever go wrong.

Dont use comparison websites for insurance at your age. Go direct to the comapanies: Direct line, churchil and tesco have all been fantastic for me (I'm 20)
