Witnessed a rather ugly confrontation between some oriental looking guy in an SUV and a traffic warden.

The oriental guy was parked in a no parking zone - still in the vehicle, waiting probably - and got slapped with a ticket. Cue lots of 'you fker this and that'...drove off giving him the finger etc.

Traffic warden handled in very well I must say and was polite.

Traffic wardens may have st jobs and we love to hate them, but I don't think they deserve that level of abuse.

Question is, if traffic wardens are employed to stop people parking illegally, why don't they tell people like Mr SUV to move along instead of just sneaking a fine in?

Do they exist to issue fines or to do a job of stopping people parking illegally?

Nope, I think they're scum. There are pleanty of other jobs out there. You've got to be a certain type to want to cause that sort of missery to society.

I remember once getting the attention of one (flashing lights, horn etc) just to show him the coffee beans. Made my day. (I was in a really foul parking related mood)

Sure but they just follow local bylaws etc....it's transparent etc, they don't have arbitrary power to fine.

What I mean is this: I once pulled up and started parking on a single yellow line. My plan was to park and then check the signs. A traffic warden came up to me half way through the manoeuvre and said: "You can't park here until after 10am" and I happily thanked him. Good traffic warden. He could easily have let me park, issued a fine and then it's a lose-lose situation.

To issue fines.

In our local town, for several years there was only one traffic warden. Then the council decided to make a huge area double yellows, and by co-incidence managed to recruit three more wardens..... You have to speculate to accumulate.

And you can't find another job. You can't pay your mortgage/rent. Your children are hungry, your wife regrets marrying a man who can't provide. You feel like a failure at life, your options are to live off benefits or to take any job available. Even a soul destroying one like a traffic warden. What would you do?

Seen one being verbally abused and told to get away from his car, waiving him off. Even chased him around his car - big bloke too.
They mostly work in pairs now, don't they?!

Having a go at traffic wardens should be an option for people doing community service.

To be fair, those traffic wardens I see in city centre daily - seem to be pretty happy with their jobs.

Or so it seems...they walking in pairs, chatting away...must get dark moments at times sure, but can't be that bad?!

Sure it's not exactly hard, not stuck in a soul destroying office 9-5.

Given so many people seem to be selfish morons who think they have the right to drive/park wherever the hell they want I am quite glad of them tbh, the roads would be a nightmare to navigate otherwise.

I'd take a soul destroying 9-5'er over a job requiring double day shift, bank holidays and weekends, not to mention hostility/abuse/violence from your clients for £5.50 an hour. Frankly for the pay they receive I'm amazed anyone does the job at all.
Is it min wage is it?

If I secure financially like had paid off my mortgage I'd think about it say for 30-40 hrs a week.

I'm thick skinned and handy enough in a scuffle. Bring it on I say!biggrin

I have never fallen foul of one, had to pay a ten pound fine once in a car park as I forgot to buy a ticket but otherwise I tend to park considerately and as such dont get hassled by them.

The kind of people who park in contravention to whatever rules are in place do seem to be the type that will kick off, like the ones that park unrepentantly in Disabled spots or Child spaces, without going into the merits of doing that I just dont as I dont want to look like one of those blokes.

Traffic Wardens serve a purpose and I cant imagine they do it to cause misery, it is just a job, it pays the bills, nobody leaves school wanting to be a Traffic Warden and get spat at, punched, sworn at by members of the public, they do it to earn a living, ok there may be the odd one thats in it to be a tt but most just do the job, I could imagine slapping a ticket on a badly parked big off roader owned by some agressive prick could be cathartic.

Too many people think they are special and the rules dont apply to them, now I am no sheep but I appreciate that for society to work there needs to be some rules and a bit of respect, there are plenty of the former but a dearth of the latter at the moment.
