I have some bits of rust on the edges of my doors, and a few spots on an edge of my bonnet. I'd like to remove the worst of it, and paint it with some kind of "b
d paint", so as to keep the metal in decent condition until such time as I can get it repaired.
Any recommendations? Silver POR15?

Loctite 7500
I think Loctite Rust Remedy is the same thing but available off the shelf from most places.
I painted some rusty iron blocks a couple of years ago with 7500 as a test. They have been left outside untouched in all weathers since. They are still pretty much the same when I checked a week ago, great product.

I think there are some better products than POR15 out there these days, but I'm sorry, I can't recall the name. I painted a midget rear axle in POR15 only to find it all peeled off 2 years later. In one solid sheet! I think there was a group test of products like that in Practical classics, might be a good place to start.
I assume silver because it's a close match?
How good a finish are you after? A really good rub down, filler, primer and can could give you a few years, and a better appearance than a heavy duty rust killer. I did this on my first car on the rusty arches, and they still looked good (ish) two years later. My uncle did give me a hand, he's restored a fair few cars, I'm sure that helped!

1997 actually
Yes, its falling to pieces. I wanted to get rid this year but I'm not taking any chances with the economy, and instead am keeping the car and fixing it up. Its done 240,000 miles and can easily do that again, provided it doesn't collapse in a heap of rust inside the next 12 months or so. It really is a beautiful car to drive, so relaxing and quiet, assured. Such a shame about the rust.
I just want to sand back the rust, and paint it with something b
d-strength that won't make it look too pikey.

Just doing this on a small scale on the 944. Cut rust back with a wire brush, sander or whatever, I used a Dremel with a sanding drum in a small space. Then paint with a rust converter, Trustan 23 or I'm using Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80 which works very well. Then use a zinc galvanising spray, then spray filler, primer & paint.

Ive just taken in a 2001 Y E class, very well cared for however the front edges of the front wings by the outside headlamps and also the wheel arches are all showing signs of bubbling. Its disgraceful that this was a 'premium' car when new and priced accordingly and yet there is a Rover 600 I also took in on an R redg that has no rust whatsoever on its body and is in unbelievable condition underneath-its 5 years older than the merc and has covered double the mileage and has led a much harder life and yet...
