I was always led to believe the 1 series is staggeringly good.

Not owned one, and having recently had the chance I declined the opportunity to buy one, but I fail to see what is rubbish about the 3 series (in any of its various guises over the past 35 or so years)

So, why is the 3 series rubbish?

VW Golf.
Audi is the ultimate badge-purchase at the moment i would say.

Re; the 1 series comments - If someone could find me a small RWD car with 200bhp (250bhp) that does 50+mpg/7.0s (6.1s)/150mph, and which doesn't have a BMW badge, i would gladly have bought it.

My Z4 has been utterly reliable. There are far far worse brands than BMW. Porsche is number one on the list. exploding shafts/engines and a measly 2 year warranty..

I think engineering-wise BMW are hard to beat. It's the styling these days that's rubbish.

What is rubbish about a 911 or a Boxster/Cayman? Apart from the Cayenne which is hideous and the Panemera which some/most consider horrible (I personally have warmed to it after seeing it in the flesh)

I was just trolling really. But the more I've thought about it the more I think it probably does apply to a few models with them.

Do people really buy a Prius because it's a Toyota? Or do they buy one because it's a nice tax dodge?

Styling aside, isn't the Cayenne actually really good at what it does?

Slightly O/T, but out of interest, how do you find the ride and the steering? I'm strongly considering chopping in the Focus soon, and I was looking at the 123d. Also, is the economy *really* 50+mpg?

I'm planning on having a test drive, but it would be good to get some insight.

As for the original topic of rubbish cars selling on brand, it hasn't happened yet, but let's face it they'll be everywhere soon

I think the cheapest models of some brands sell on the brand over the car - the 3-Series Compact springs to mind as a cynical marketing exercise. then you have the AM Cygnet hehe

As an aside, the 1-Series being a class-leader was not my experience, but then RWD isn't important to me on a mileage hack so other things come to the fore.

What, off-roading? I don't really think so.

If you mean "being a huge handbag-extention for yummy mummies" then yes, I think it does that quite well.
