Reading the Haynes manual for my car it says that you should fit new ABS sensors when changing the bearings. Firstly, why, secondly, are they expensive, and thirdly, what happens if I just refit the old ones.

A lot of cars now have the ABS sensors integrated with the hub/bearing, so you cant' replace the bearing without replacing the ABS sensors anyway.

What car have you got (would have been a useful piece of info in your post, really)?

Sorry, I have a focus, 01 model. I have the new bearings ready to go in, and from what I can tell the sensor just pushes on top/ into the same recess. Cant see any reason why they wont come out and go back in one piece provided your careful, but Haynes are sure they want new parts.

If you get an ABS light then replace them, otherwise don't bother.

+1 To this.

I did the same on my 01 Mondeo, didn't get any problems.

Save the trouble. Remove them before you start fannying around with the wheel bearings, then refit them afterwards.

Do you mean ABS ring, or ABS sensor?
Ring is, usually, to be replaced upon bearing renewal.
Probably due to potential distortion that may be introduced by levering out.
Which also means fitting new with equal pressure all round.
