Definitely a camper van. She wants something that is a bit bigger than a Caravenette, runs on diesel & is going to be quite reliable.

I have no idea where to start!

Actually, as soon as I read the OP I thought of the Bongo.

Seat looks a bit grubby but I'd have it, especially if the price could come down a bit towards your mum's budget

I've only heard good things about these! (I'm sure a couple of PH'ers have them)

I thought about a Bongo, but I don't think they are quite big enough for her frown

I like the look of that Vauxhall, though!

Can you get a Sprinter for that money? Hiace would work too as well as usual suspects.

Not quite as awesome as that 'bago, but this looks big enough, runs on LPG and should be able to keep up with traffic:

The key thing about campers is finding where you're willing to compromise. If you want comfort, you get something big but they're more expensive to run and more importantly, you can't just pop down to Tesco in them. You're massively restricted where you can go, to the extent where you're better off with a caravan so you can at least have something to get around in.

The best compromise is a small van with a pop-top. They're small enough to get around towns in but with enough room to stand. It's surprising how easy it is to make a small space comfortable, although if you're with a partner you have to get on biggrin

The huge winnebago things might seem like a good idea but you essentially have to go from campsite to campsite, so you might as well take a car and rent static-caravans.

Thanks for all the advice, folks. In the end, I managed to steer her down the Bongo route & she bought one today.
