BMW 520 - 2006 - Bluetooth

Wondering if anyone can give help me with regards to getting bluetooth working properly on a 5 series
Basically it has a hands free cradle and little microphone attached to the car above the drivers head. I can connect to the hands free kit (comes up as T&T BB 81 Series) when the phone is sat in the cradle and the engine is on. However, when you go to call someone it just does it as normal through the phone, not through the car/microphone. There is no option/setting within the computer for bluetooth although there is what appears to be a phone symbol on one of the buttons on the steering wheel but pressing this does nothing.
Trying to sort it as a favour for my dads boss but obviously struggling. Anyone any idea?
