Will they do anything different?

Have we elected the same stuff but with a blue badge (no pun intended)?

If the Tories do what Tories used to do and the economy goes into massive recession to redress the deficits then will this push up fuel, tax etc. or will they just let it all rot together and make the roads a rich man's playground?

Tax, tax and tax for the forseeable future. We've got 13 years of labours incompetence to sort out.

We haven't got one yet...............

What is clear however is that some how we have to payback all the billions the country is in debt, the full amount is not exposed but it's not going to be loose change frown

It won't be what will happen, but what won't. We shouldn't see national road pricing now, which was just stupid. Hopefully the central government will take the lead of tory councils and start scaling back speed cameras too...

The midlands/north were utterly destroyed by the tories in the 80's. It's still buggered now as a result.

However, fuel tax - tories going to let it grow and grow? Will they stop the escalator or reduce the tax paid, or just let it go as it won't affect the rich anyway?

Christ, Cameron isn't even in number 10 yet and already the lefties are creeping out of the woodwork telling us all how it was back in the eighties....

On the motoring front, I doubt you'll see any change in taxation policy. Its too much of a cash cow for any government to change. Hopefully however there will be announcements on scrapping the silly idea of road pricing and all the associated costs surrounding research into it at the moment.

What we need to do is annex wales and anything north of oxford from the profitable rest of the country.

um let's set the story straight here in the 70's like always labour spent spent spent and got the whole country into a total mess however clearly labour / dole loved it cash to them for doing nothing like the last 13 years. So problem was huge debt and defecit and hyper inflation c20% so yes they cut spending and upped taxes to pay for labour. Then what happened when labour came in the country was not far off debt free and totally in surplus so clearing the debt.

What did labour do last 13 years up spending so in defecit year on year. He set the golden rules to balance the books over 1 parlament but when he realised he couldn't deliver he changed the goal posts stating his golend rules had started earlier ie during the Tory time so suddenly he had pulled out £11billions to fill his defecit hole.

Next he sold our gold at their lowest value in the last 35years to help cover the defecit. He put in stealth taxes on pension funds raising £50billion a year and we wonder why now so many schemes are in defecit.

Now were in a total mess all down to labour and yes were going to have lots of taxes to pay for labour. What will happen in 3 parlaments time labour will bang on about how hard it's been and they offer cash for the poor etc so they get back in and it all happens again. Labour are a spend and big public sector party tory by the end of the 90's had just sorted us out so the next term could have been true eight wing

According to their manifesto, they wanted to stabilise fuel prices by lowering the tax as the price of oil goes up. Will have to see whether or that will happen in whatever government coalition we end up with...

Edit: This is pretty much all they've mentioned on motoring:

Tory Website said:
Road users have had a raw deal under Labour, so we will:

* Crack down on road works, introducing lane rental for some of our busiest roads;
* Give more powers to local councils to get traffic moving;
* Crack down on rogue clampers;
* Introduce a lorry road user charge, so foreign lorries pay their fair share of tax;
* Consult on our Fair Fuel Stabiliser; and
* Facilitate the switch to green cars by creating a national car recharging network.

Expect to suffer, whoever forms the next Government.

Unless of course you're a banker, in which case, you'll be able to cope by gambling with the rest of our pensions to 'earn' your 6 figure bonus each quarter...

And then the Tories will cut your tax rate as you're such a help to the country.

Deep down, I fear we'll just have more self serving morons running the country - Tony Blair was Labour's answer to Margaret Thatcher (hence his deliriously right wing love affair with a Republican President) and Cameron is the Tories answer to Blair.

What did Labour do for us? Nothing, but Tony Blair certainly looked after himself - Expect Cameroon to focus on the same...

Massively increased fuel bills, reduced budget for road repairs, toll motorways - They're the future...

Same old st but under the new 'green' umbrella.

If anyone really thinks that car tax(duty) will change or fuel prices will drop by 20p are seriously deluded. I CANNOT see it going under £1 ever again.

They may, as a concession, remove some speed cameras. But I suspect it will either be replaced with pointless 20Mph in towns with 50mph in rural locations and more road pricing to pay for the years of road under investment.

As for the carrot method of crossing over to another fuel. I suspect the people on here who remember the swap over from leaded to unleaded. Great, until it was all gone and up ramped the prices.

And if they saddle up to the Libdems well....We really are fked!

With changing (brainwashed) attitude towards the motorcar, the (golden) age of motoring is dead!

And 13 years of Labour has made it better/worse??
Only been 24, I cant remember the 'damage' done by the conservatives from 1979 onwards, but having looked into it (Read skimmed the surface) I think this country is ALOT worse off now than it was back then, in every sense you can imagine.
