Sorry for posting it here but I needed an answer fairly quick!

on the daily driver (Passat 2.0tdi) the coolant warning light came on said i needed to stop! no rise in engine temp no noticeable decline in performance. Anybody know how I check the coolant and could this just be a faulty sensor? I dont really want to go down to VW and pay them £45 for a diagnostic check.... Many Thanks

You probably just need to top up the coolant. Look in your owners manual to show you how.

I'd hazard a guess at the bottle being faulty, as it is a common fault on the mk4 Golf on startup, every mk4 Golf I've had done this occasionally

Turning it off and restarting it usually cured it.

To be safe I'd check the coolant and top up if necessary.

I would top it up before going to vw, if it goes down again it may be worth getting it checked out out as there may be a leak.
Get a torch and give it a shine around the bottom of the rad and pipes and see if you can spot any signs of leaking too.

Wait till the coolant is COLD then top up to the MAX level with the correct spec coolant.

thanks guys just been back out to check again as its cold and its now way below the min level... so off to get some G12... will check around the pipes etc when its dry for leaks.... it is due for a service.... my only concern now is where has it all gone... checked the oil seems clean so dont think its gone into the engine, will monitor it over the next few days once topped up... obviously if it does drop again we know we have a problem... fingers crossed not! thanks again.

It might be worth mentioning it at the next service, but I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens again.
