French don't like us

Recently my wife and I were sitting on the docks in Calais waiting for our ferry to Dover. We were early and for an hour we watched the HGV's coming into Calais from the UK. Nearly all the UK lorries were immaculate, modern and obviously well looked after but every one without exception was pulled over, papers checked and/or driven to one side and gone through with nasty looking thug dog handlers. The other lorries driven and registered in Poland, Italy etc were waved through and most of them were grubby looking with drivers fag hanging out of mouth, unshaven tired looking, number plates hanging off etc etc. Only one was stopped then waved through after 5 seconds. It was so obvious they were only pulling British lorries - anyone think why ? Rant over.

Perhaps they'd been alerted to contraband on a UK lorry or something and needed to focus on them that day.

Perhaps the ones from Poland, Italy etc were more likely to be on a return journey and therefore empty, whilst the Brit lorries have contents and are on a delivery?

Apart from the sacasm, the OP raises an issue here.

Most lorry cabs are classed as a place of work, and therefore can't be smoked in these days?

Or does that only kick in once on British soil?

they have been like this for years , and now altho you may find it a bit of a joke the illegals now try to sneak back to france so they can sneak back to uk for another dose of british hospitality !
it is well known all thru euro land that the brits are the most tightly controlled lorries on the road but it doesnt seem to have any effect on the kermits they still hate us

The Polish etc will have already been through the first time and hammered by the French, whereas the British lorries will be just entering for the first time.
