VW Golf MK5 Red Dash Light Meaning?
Discussion
Has it got an exclamation mark (!) inside it?
If so, that's your handbrake. You might want to release that before driving off.
More likely - it's a light to tell you to change up when you get too high up the rev range. Rev the nuts off it and see if it comes on when you're near the red line.

If the light is red, and shows a circle bounded by brackets, it's a brake fluid level warning - check your brake fluid.<<<<---------- If the light stays on all the time
If it's as above with an exclamation mark (!) in the middle, it's a handbrake warning: Either the handbrake is on or the switch is faulty.
If it's orange & the brackets are dotted, the pads are worn & should be replaced.
If it's orange & there's a symbol in the centre (zig zag lines), there's an ABS fault & the car needs to be plugged in for diagnosis.
If it's orange with letters in the middle (ESP or TCS, can't remember VW's acronym), then it's a traction control problem, again requiring diagnosis.
