What car!! (sorry) for one of those poor student types!
Discussion
Hey guys, hope you all had a great weekend
.
As it stands at the moment, I am looking to get a nice new (ish) car at the end of summer... Harahh!.
However, being an insanely poor student my budget is somewhat hugely limited.
My current favorite is a Peugeot 106 rallye, as it seems to be cheap, fairly quick, insurance is a lot, but it all helps towards a lovely ncb and something tasty when I'm 21, oh and I nearly forgot the awesome handling
, lift-off oversteer-tastic!.
However they seem to be on the rise price wise as of late, so if anyone could suggest something primarily interesting, but relatively cheap to insure, (no ncb at the moment but been driving for 2 years as a named driver, and no, it was not a case of fronting.
) and fairly reliable, that would be brilliant
.
Oh and I'm sorry this is another what car thread, my bad, have a cyber pint as consolation

. Are you talking about the mk5? People who own them seem to have only good things to say about them!
I was also thinking about looking at them, but the thing that has put me off so far is the fact that 95% of them seem to have rusted arches or/as well as being ragged to within an inch of their life by some chav who has ruined it with terrible modifications.

My mate recently got a non-chavved one, and I've got the shopping model... the rust is getting bad on mine (year or so older than his), but if you look carefully enough, you can find a good one...I was also thinking about looking at them, but the thing that has put me off so far is the fact that 95% of them seem to have rusted arches or/as well as being ragged to within an inch of their life by some chav who has ruined it with terrible modifications.
Having replaced the bushes and suspension arms in his, it's been transformed to have incredibly tight handling, so it may be worth keeping some repairs in mind when bargaining a price... But like I said, a Zetec S is a very good car

Saxo VTR! I'm sure this'll be the only nod for the VTR but if you can find an unmolested one, why the f
k not?
Was also looking at the possibilities of having one of these, but unfortunately due to some silly people once again, the insurance is massively high as a fair few have obviously been involved in shunts.
k not? Also, not sure I would enjoy everyone calling me a boy racer or thinking of me as one... friend of mine has a (badly) modded saxo with a fairly loud exhaust, just going out with him for a short run I found people tend to give you nasty looks, also, that thing attracts more people in badly modded corsas and such than a cruise at a mcdonalds carpark on a friday night.
Which is a shame really as I've also herd good things about these. Minus the tiny pedal box

, any idea what a relatively decent one of these is going for nowadays?Oh and in answer to your previous suggestion, the 1.7 puma would simply kill me on insurance, and I didn't see the point in going for one of the smaller engined ones.
My budget is super super bargain basement, 2K being the absolute maximum for the car alone.

Er... your about 10X out in terms of what is super super bargain basement price for a working car.2 grand, the worlds, almost, your oyster!
I have been playing that brilliant game of trawling the classifieds and seeing what I can get, there are so so many lovely cars that would be brilliant for that price, its just insurance absolutely kills anything that would be remotely fun... was looking at e30 318is's, cheapest quote was 2k. Kindly bore off.
It is super irritating that insurance is so bad for younger people, despite driving for 2 years, IAM training, learning using roadcraft and an ex-traffic cop as an instructor. (oh and please don't think of me as a cocky little bu*ger, I still realise I have a lot to learn and that I am not an amazing driver at all in the grand scheme of things).
It would just be nice to have something that is actually capable of getting up to motorway speeds without hassle etc. After driving an exige a few mercs as well as my dads car, it is quite the disappointment to then return to a 1.2 wobble mobile.

Not going so well is this! haha.
There just seems to be such a terribly limited choice of cars for someone of my age, being:
Saxo - vtr
Fiesta - mk5
Clio
Corsa
Peugeot - 106, 206, 205.
VW - Polos, Lupo, tiny engined Golf.
Punto.
Alfa - 145
Most of which seem to be either uninspiring or unattainable due to insurance.
my best bets atm seem to be:
106 gti/rallye.
Saxo vtr.
Mk5 Fiesta zetec s.

Get a nice 3dr 306. Either a 1.9diesel or preferablly one of the petrol engined 'warm' ones, an XS, or an XSi. There pretty low insurance groupings, dirt cheap to run and fix, but importantly although they are not raging power machines there still really nice to drive.
Or a 1.4 Puma would be good too. not fast, but again, at least its still nice to drive.

For £2000 maximum, you'd be looking at a fairly ropey Zetec S unless you found a properly rare bargain, as it'd probably need some work anyway...
For £2000 max on the fun Ford front, a 1.6 Puma could be had, or like I said, a good bargain on an early Phase 1 Zetec S...
Have you tried Autotrader for Zetec Ss and Pumas?
Yeah that's what I thought you were going to say regarding the mk5 zetec s that is, just a little out of my price range me thinks.
I am now thinking wether it might be worth looking at something interesting and nice to look at compared to something built to be specifically fast, then save for a nicer turbo nutter as and when I can afford it.
Can anyone think of anything quirky that could provide me with a few years enjoyment
