Hey guys,
A quick question. I have a little bit of a crud inside my carb atm on my 1.8 mk2 jetta, was speaking to a friend who is pretty knowledgeable in these matters and he suggested using fuel injection cleaner to clear it out? For obvious reasons im abit dubious, but would it work?
Cheers

What makes you believe you have crud in the carb, and where do you think it is? If it's sediment in the float chamber, the easiest solution would most likely be to take the lid off, swab it out and blow the jets through with compressed air. I can't see injector cleaner dissolving rust or sediment - varnish, maybe.

I was running the tank low and now whenever the car is up to temperature it splutters abit at lowe revs sometimes. Spoke to a mechanic who said it sounds like fuelstarvation and that the jets need cleaning. Sound about right?

That sounds right, but the way to clear jets is to get them out and blow them through. Using injector cleaner is a bit hopeful. Taking the lid off a carb isn't usually too difficult but you'll need a gasket kit for when you reassemble it (motor factor). However, before taking anything to bits, see if there's a fuel filter that you could change first. There might even be another teeny weeny filter where the fuel pipe enters the carb - istr cleaning one out ages ago.

Yeah I think there is, thinking back to my Mk2 Golf Driver which had the same problem

I have already changed the main fuel filter (inline) but I'll have a look for another one. Cheers
