Just been offered an '02 307 2.0 HDi 90 by someone I know as I need a 'mile munching' daily.

Anyone got one, know if they're any good and what to look out for as I've never owned a french motor and know mothing about these HDi's

Thanks

Good engine, Heavy Car so about as quick as an asthmatic ant carrying heavy shopping, French so electrical gremlins are likely, if its cheap and looks OK worth a punt as a hack but the 306 is much nicer to drive.

My girlfriend has one, we really wished we had bought the 110hp one as its painfully slow around town. However, once up to speed its ok on the motorway, comfortable and the long gearing makes it economical.

40k later only had to replace a few consumables and an exhaust strap.

This. Seriously. Just don't. I had one as a hire car from Dublin to Cork. It made me HATE driving.

Phah, try a 1.6 Auto - even worse, if that's possible. Hateful car.

It's one of those cars you just want to drive in to a tree so you can put it out of it's misery.

They are huge inside, handy if you like wearing a large hat or have comedy hair.

Happy to give you some info on them, had a couple of them.

Is it an SW/Break or a regular one?
Both are very very big inside!

The 90bhp one is pretty slow tough, would always go for the 110hp, they have all the poke you ever need in a car like that.

I had the 110 and the 136, and the 136 was fun with 5 people, a roof box and a full boot, in the mountains. But other than that, the chassis just couldn't cope with 136hp (!).

As said, a great car (for what it is), but you'll be struggling with 90hp and loaded up.

oh, forgot to add they have the most annoying feature i've seen on a car; indicators which automatically switch from side to side when exiting an island (or tight bend, or any corner come to think of it)

I had a 110 HDi Quicksilver as a courtesy car for a week and put a few miles on it. To be honest It felt under powered. I apreciate its a diesel but the powerband was just way to short. Other than that it was just an average car.

My brother also had a facelift 56 plate GT HDI 136 which replaced the old XSI. It was 6 months old when he bought it and he to sell it a year later as the warrenty was running out soon and it had too much go wrong with it to keep it without a warrenty. In the time he owned it the turbo had to be replaced (sub 30K miles), a new alternator, the traction control went two or three times, the bolsters on the drivers seat collapsed and I'm sure there was more that went wrong with it.

In short run away!

The engines aren't bad and will easily outlast the car.... the car its self is very poorly made with lots of quality and electrical issues.

Incidentally, taking the 90BHP model up to 110 is a simple case of transplanting in the intercooler and associated pipework and getting someone to tweak the ECU. Intercooler parts are bolt-on and common with just about every Peugeot and Citroen car and van that use the same engine, so plenty scrapped mini-cabs and commercials you can harvest from.

Overall unburtstable and a lot less fragile than the equivalent common-rail engines in many many other cars.

^This. Also had a 110 version (3-door) and never had any problems with it (apart from a few door-opening dents).

The Mrs has got the 1.6 5-door Auto version (06-plate) and it's needed a couple of bits - coil pack I think and a couple of balljoints - nothing major or out of the ordinary.

are you sure that wasnt just you hitting the stalk.. ?

I borrowed a 1.6 307 and covered about 1200miles in it over 5days, was very very slow and boring but did its job well.. an HDI engine would improve the economy even more, although i would want the 110 as a minimum for power.. but if its cheap enough, got to be worth a go.

307 1.4 HDi here & yes very sluggish, keeps locking itself when its wet, the indicator stalky thing, handbrake & gear knob freeze in the winter, only 49 mpg because your foot to the floor all the time. But, it's a nice car, roomy etc, only £35 road tax. Try & get a good one otherwise it'll do your head in. banghead
