OH is getting rid of her KA and wants to upgrade.
I have a 1991 CRX vtec in a mild state of tune so I'm happy with having a low, loud and revvy little classic...
I'm quite happy for her to have a vehicle which is the polar opposite.

So which is best? anyone out there had first had experience?

We do plenty of camping, mountain biking, kayaking so offroad credentials are a little bit justified..
Personally Kuga wins it, but pricey.... £20k is the budget.

Had a Kuga for a day and think they're wildly underrated. I thought it was a genuinely nice place to be.

The Skoda Yeti seems to be getting nothing but praise, so perhaps another one to consider.

Nissan Murano?

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1695137.htm

Far under budget, bit more PH and the money saved can go towards petrol thumbup

They seem to be incredible value for money IMO.

Edited to add: Mazda CX-7 is also a good looking car

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1697421.htm

Citroen C-Crosser is quite a looker (shared platform with Mitsubishi and Peugeot)

One of them is a myth and the other one is a personal opinion smile.

Murano was on the shortlist until I sat in it...not a nice place to spend time.
Yeti didn't make the shortlist...OH won't spend that much on the badge - I told her, I said she was a snob, but it's her cash.
C-Crosser thing didn't meet my needs for looks, and neither does it's cousins..
CX-7 - hmm...going to have to find one to sit and fiddle with - a contender.

Other shortlisters were 159 sportwagon or Subaru Legacy,

Forester too ugly for us....shame.
Tiguan - too pricey and no looker
Freelander - didn't spark any interest
X3 - just no
Q5 - too pricey
C6 - couldn't bear taking it to B&Q or the tip...
VX Antera - just no
Mutipla - She wouldn't budge - too ugly
Avantime - too old with too many reliability issues.. (?)
Sirocco - She LOVEs them - too small though.

CX-7 would be my choice though the XC-60 is pretty good too!

Audi RS6... you know it makes sense

More realistic: Volvo XC70

We have a Qashqai, had it 2 yrs.

Great car but the local main dealer is rubbish!

You can get a fully specced up one for £18k, with heated leather, electric panoramic roof, auto headlights (HID), auto wipers, keyless entry and start, brilliant SATNAV system, bluetooth etc.

Oh and 60mpg!

see its the panoramic roof thing thats really affecting the decision... sat in both the Qashqai and the Kuga, both had the glass roof...made SUCH a difference...

XC60 Volvo too expensive sadly...
XC70 = hmmm not really...no...

I'm a bit of a fan of the Kuga styling. But I guess it depends what you want, if it has to be new and if you like "different" ideas or not.

The little Fiat Panda 4x4 is pretty cool for what it is, but for £20k I'd personally be looking at these:

Jeep Wrangler JK

3 door SWB:

or 5 door LWB Unlimited:

Ok they are more off road biased, but they are still pretty good on the road and because they drive like a 4x4 are actually more fun than a 4x4 trying to drive like a car.

And that's the crux, they are huge fun. Very, very capable off road (equal or better than any Land Rover). And have an array of fun features like a removable roof, removable doors and a fold down windscreen. The inside is also easy to clean with drain holes in the floor so you can hose the footwells out if muddy. Good tow cars too. And available with a punchy 2.8 CRD motor and lots of options. The Sahara spec ones come loaded or there's the more basic sport model.

Long term residuals are also good on these (although short term from new is probably no better than the Kuga).

the missus brother has just bought an 09 plate Kuga..

It is fantastic. 2.0tdci Zetec in White - has bluetooth, alloys, a/c, rear parking, manual box, Drives like a focus with ground clearance, lots of room up front for two large adults and room in the back for two adults comfortably, not sure on MPG as havent really looked. picked it up from Chelmsford and drove it back to colchester and it was great on the A12, the town roads and the farm tracks back home.

The Qashqai is good also but i just feel that there are too many around and they are a little too plasticy and old looking in design, The Kuga seems a much nicer place to be even with the ford plastic's!

Ford Kuga

I think that externally, the Kuga is a GREAT looking car. But I can't really see that much difference in those interiors...

Just to complicate your choice further, my missus test drove a Kuga and Tiguan when chosing her company bus.

The Tiguan is an overwhelmingly nicer place to be IMHO.
She went for a 2.0TDI auto in the end, specced to the nines. I find it a surprisingly relaxing and nice bit of kit to drive if you just want to get from A to B and carry lots of sh*t with you.

On the Tiguan note,

i can get a 2.0tdi SE Tiguan with Metallic for £21k brand new - factory order is around 12wks if you wanted to do something like that..

or a Brand new 2.0tdci Zetec Kuga with Metallic for £21150 - factory order..

Just if your interested.

I very, very nearly landed a CX-7, but got cold feet last minute.

They're thin on the ground now, let alone in 5 or so years time when you need to buy something from the scrappies for it.

I can't imagine it being easy trying to source service parts, exhausts, brakes, CV joints etc. I bet they would be Mazda only parts.

£400p/y on tax & it's not very economical- at all.

Oh and I believe Sat Nav is an aftermarket add-on- just stuck in the window like a taxihehe

We had a diesel Qashqai XL or whatever they're called on 24hr test drive. Lovely to drive, but did feel a little cheap in places.
My biggest gripe was the LCD screen, which looked like they grafted it straight from the old Almera.

I think you can spec them with a Sat Nav which folds away into the dash, which does away with the woeful thing.

The smaller Qashqais are nice, especially the special edition in Purple.

What about the new Freelander or Volvo XC60?

Sat in a couple over the weekend and I wasn't sold...that and the squarer profile and squarer wheel arches put me off...
