Check the steering rack. And the steering rack. And don't forget the steering rack.

Aside from the steering rack, I would also check the:

- Steering rack
- Check gearbox for behaviour when cold (2nd can be tough to select)
- Front roll bar can loosen
- Plastic intake cover can resonate
- Alloy wheels like to corrode after 24 minutes of use
- Rear cambers can be out of spec due to parts errors- this can be checked at a dealer via the VIN number
- Rust on the bonnet/leading edges anywhere due to crap paint
- Seizing rear brakes, a Honda speciality

Those are the main ones. Mine also managed to need an entire replacement gearbox, a new exhaust manifold and the entire dash out to remove a well known rattle.

+1

These cars are in the territory for young drivers to get hold of them now so you want to be careful of cheap/bodged repair jobs.

The amount of faults on it and poor paint, they could have stuck a Rover badge on it back in the day and no one would have batted an eyelid, it fits the stereotype so well.

The three people I've known with these over the years have all had expensive bother with them. Bloody good luck if you get one.

May not be relevant to this car/engine. But I herd that you should check it has been given a good thrashing through the rev range every now and then, otherwise problems with the vtec solonoids might occour... I am no expert at all... very happy to be corrected.

I bought a 2002 model a few weeks ago, very good fun cars. They "feel" solid and reliable too. The engines are bulletproof if serviced correctly. I bought mine as I wanted something that wouldnt cost much to run, wouldnt lose too much money but was still good fun.

Very happy with it so far.

Like:

> The engine. You either like vtec engines or you dont. They dont have huge amounts of torque, but thats the point, you rev the nuts off it!

> The gearbox. Little notchy when cold, but once warmed up its very very good, one of the best I have ever used. A joy to use the six very short gears.

> The Chassis. Despite having little steering feel, the car still gives you confidence. Hard to explain, but you still get the feeling of it being planted and you can still feel what the the tyres are doing. Oversteer is available on demand.

Dislike:

> Could do with more feel in the steering

> Could do with more adjustment in the steering wheel

> The blowers are not great

> Dipped headlights are not great (full beams are good though).

Overall, very nice car.

Tiff sums its up pretty well:
