Time to get rid of the 330d Touring as its a bit of a motorway beast, but i would like something more fun and sporty.

SO, 3rd Gen Celica, late Prelude 2.2vtec or 200sx

all can be had for similar money (no more than 4.5K- preule cheapest, celica most expensive) and all are quite similar. So which to go for- key is reliability. have driven all 3, and none were dreadful but none blew me away!

4.5k would get you a tidy 944, a mint e36 328 sport or an average e36 m3.....unless you're stuck on Japanese of course.

200SX... RWD fun. Lots of tuning potential for not much money, too.

4.5K should put you in a fairly tidy Celica GT-4

As far as I'm aware, the 200SX seems to be the one to go for.
Other suggestions:
Alfa GTV V6
BMW M3/328 (As suggested)
Nissan 300ZX
Mitsubishi 3000GT
Porsche 944 S2

Reliability is key - if it goes wrong it either needs to be fixable by me, or not TOO expensive to fix. Major japs stuff has a deserved reputation for reliability alebit a lack of interior "style". Would stick the 944 in the same bracket.

beemers too expensive to run- not as reliable as i would like and too expensive to fix when it goes wrong!

ITR- car also needs to be comfortable for long journeys- understood that ITRs were quite "firm", but i've never been in one so will have a look if its worth it.

calibras- are they actually "fun" to drive? had always throught of them as a bit of a barge!

Fiat Coupe- an interesting suggestion- are they reliable, or typicial Italian Stallions? Bit temperamental and unreliable?

No idea where folks get this idea from, parts prices are about the same as Jap stuff (more sometimes!) BUT there is far wider scope for obtaining OE alternatives or 2nd hand parts with pre 2005 stuff

personal experience of running 2 e46s- went wrong- CONSTANTLY, and after buying BM's for years will never buy another second hand one!
