Pleasant Surprise
Discussion
I got quite a nice surprise today. Had a meeting near Manchester this morning and then had another one in Nottingham this afternoon. Followed my sat nav along the M62 towards the M1 but found quite a lot of traffic. Decided to get of the motorway and try an alternative route, came off at junction 22 which I think was called Saddleworth, and wow what a lovely road, followed it for a few miles then just after a pub called Turnpike took a very sharp right turn, drove along the bottom of a dam and then onto a very tight but again another great road.
Really put a smile on my face, just a shame I was in the diesel and not the Porsche.
Anyone else ever discovered a great road by luck?

I take that road to work quite often and others round there, either on the bike or in the car and really get a shift on. Do watch out for sheep ambling into the road - and there are two sharp but nicely set up bends with little (thigh high) brick walls on them. The wooly buggers all hide behind them for shelter - not what you need when you are giving it the beans around what looks like a totally open corner. You only make that mistake once! Nice on a sunny afternoon too cos there's an ice cream van. Coming home is more of a pain though as you have to queue to get off at Ainley Top coming west.Really put a smile on my face, just a shame I was in the diesel and not the Porsche.

If you want to sample some more good roads try going the other way towards Oldham when you come off at J22. Follow the road off the moors down to Denshaw (couple of miles) and turn left in the dip at the bottom (signed Huddersfield I think). Follow this all the way over Saddleworth moor and down to Huddersfield where your satnav could take you one of several ways over to the M1. Again watch for rogue sheep but there are a good few miles of superb driving roads.

It really was an awesome road, I'm back up that way in a few weeks and plan on doing it again. Not sure if itscalled the snake pass. All I know is you get of the m62 at junction 22 heading towards the m1.
Its definately not snake pass, that runs from Glossop to sheffield, but i think i know the road you mean, and it is a crackerI first discovered the A4069 by total accident, that was a pleasant surprise.

My vote is for the B4518 through Wales. Coming back that way on a hot sunny day, perfect road surface, just a shame about the huge deisel we were in. We came around the bend and saw THIS!!!
Wow was all I could say.

It's not a good driving road by any stretch of the imagination but I had a quasi-magical experience one late evening just off the A1/A14 junction...I was coming home to Kettering from Stevenage one summer evening about 9.30, just on dusk and missed the junction. I took the next left turn towards Woolley and spent the next 20 minutes or so bimbling along through a veritable herd of rabbits all enjoying the heat reflecting back off the tarmac and no fewer than 3 owls, one of which was just sitting in the middle of the road. I stopped and we sat watching each other for what seemed like 10 minutes but was probably 10 seconds...as I said; magical.
