Current owner is saying it's 'lost'

We're not talking a huge amount of money here but alarm bells are ringing it has to be said...

No, I would never hand over any cash until I saw it.

What this man said.

Agree a price and if the current "owner" obtains a V5C from our friends in Welsh Wales then do the deal.

I've done it while the owner was waiting for it to be returned from having their private plate removed - they then forwarded it on, no issues....but "lost" is a different matter - sounds fishy, I'd be hesitant

It could be as simple as they've put it on SORN or told the DVLA that it's 'permanently exported'.
The former is easy to fix. The latter is not so easy (nor particularly quick).

It could also be that the car is not in their name and they're a 'trader' pretending to be a genuine seller and not wanting to bother with any 'consumer rights' issues after the sale.

Either way I'd ask the seller to give you a call once they've reapplied for & received the V5C and you'll split the cost of getting a new one with them.

Not having a V5 in itself is not illegal, nor is selling a car without it.

However, you just have to be confident with the guy's reason. As others have said - sending it away for a plate change, or change of address etc. etc. are all valid reasons. "Lost" is perhaps slightly less convincing but if the HPI checks out and it's not stolen; what's the risk?

Why would you even consider splitting the cost with him? If the seller has lost it let them replace it.

Seems the chap has had to split from his house, which he may or may not have access to and it's in there somewhere.

I'm uneasy if I'm honest but equally I need a car, it's what I'm looking for and it's local.

Hmmmnn...

If everything else checks out, do it.

I didn't mean to actually split the cost with him, but see whether the offer would prod him into getting it done before the sale.

You can always ask for ID to see if it matches up with what he's saying, but then he could give you a multitude of excuses as to why his name, address, age, etc. aren't correct. The V5C may be in his ex-partner's name (but owned by him) and he's taken the car when he left the property - or it might be totally genuine and it's lost?

Alternatively call the DVLA and pay your fee for finding out the owner details - as you have a valid reason for needing them - and if they don't match then walk away.

To me, it sounds like it's too much bother to check this all out, so just walk and find another.

I've done exactly the same when I bought the alfa, that was a pain though as the tax was about to expire , so I woulnt do it with a "lost" one.

I did once, travelled miles to get there to be told it was actually at his parents somewhere up north! HPI all checked out fine, and I wasn't about to travel all the way home empty handed, so bought it. Was very cheap anyway. Was told he would get it and send it on to me...this did not happen and I had to apply for a new one! I won't be doing it again!

I had this exact situation.

The guy then tried to reassure me that the V5 didn't matter as it doesn't imply ownership (agreed, but still....)

I was about to walk and then he told me he was a trader and produced the V5 which was signed by the previous owner on a different address.

I still walked as I lost confidence given his BS.

Going to have it HPI'd tomorrow.

Have had an email conversation with the fella. It's a convertible, has an electric roof but apparently there are issues and 'its just £50 for the part, my mate can get it'

There is still an interest there but I'm erring towards swerving to be fair.

Bought a Mini from minimax without the V5C. Not a big problem to get a new one (£29 IIRC) but I'd only do it if I was sure of the seller's story. £50 for a part and no V5C... smelling rather like the haddock that Gordon Brown was hiding under the floorboards of Number 10 yesterday.
