I recently sold my fireblade and now I have nothing to get my hands dirty on. Or to take me throught he twisties with a large grin on my face. Heigh ho.

I think its time to have a go at a project car. I need something as cheap as they come and is simple to work on. It doesn't need to have any sporting pretences whatsoever. Dare I say it, am I looking for an original Volkswagen Beetle?

I was looking at TVRs on auto trader and came accross an S series in bits for a shade under a grand, and as soon as I went to click on it, the ad disappeared.

Anyone have any ideas on a suitable project for someone with limited means, limited tools and limited experience?

An original VW Beetle can be a laugh to gently punt around corners, and a few very simple mods can make it huge fun. However those mods aren’t cheap and finding a good base car (one that’s not rusty) can be ££££. Fixing the rust can be ££££ too, the best way I found was to import one that wasn’t rusty to start with – my old one came from Sweden but dry state USA cars are popular.

My current stupid car is a 1980s Ginetta which is easy to fix, has cheap parts and won’t rust – galvanised chassis and GRP body are a good idea. Most Ginettas have a proud racing heritage and are worth several thousand pounds, my G26 is from the ‘80s wedge school of styling and cost a few hundred. Really nice ones, it’s all relative, seem to be less than a grand so as long as you can spanner a Cortina it’s cheap sustainable tail out motoring.

Thats what I feared re the beetle. A cult following means prices are high. Oh well.

That ginetta looks nice. Sort of like the Lotus Excel or the TVR werdges of the same period.

You mention being able to tool a cortina: well I've never really had a chance to get my tools stuck into anything bigger than a motorbike, which is why I'm looking for something where if it all falls apart its not the end of the world.

a Ford Capri would be fun, but we have the same problem as the beetle as in price.

A firend has an old MZ motorbike he'll sell me for £75. Not pretty but hey.
