I tried to hire one but was told I did not have the relevant driving experience despite having the appropriate licence to drive! Although I think there may be a tacho implication which means you need to have done a course.

Is there tacho for private use ?

Think its only when being paid to carry goods etc so not for private use

No idea about usual rates for trucks. But used these guys recently for a Luton and I was happy with them.

Not far from Poole if you want to go Poole to Cherbourg.

No idea when you got your licence, but if it was after 1997 you may not be able to drive one

Cheers Guys... just to update you - passed test in 1985 so no issues with licence and private use so no Tacho either.

For 5 day hire here's the comparison;
Icanhire.com - £753.02
sandjselfdrivehire.co.uk - £610
nationwidehire.co.uk - £900
abacus - too far away!

The next issue of Channel crossings which cost between £323 and £408!!

I know of a guy who run a hire co who used to keep a couple of lorry drivers on "standby", ready to call as he'd regularly have some tt come hire a 7.5, sit in it for ten minutes then come ask if he knew anyone who could drive it....

I'm up in Northampton so have to virtually pass Romford to get to Dover.

Where's the £440 price as I can't see it on their site?... the £610 is for 5 days including £60 for AA 5star european cover.

15-20mpg i would think maby a little more when empty. depends on the trip if its all start stop then low if its cruising at 55 then higher.

Have you called them ? they are really helpfull and will answer any question you have, if you pick up from the romford depot you should be able to leave your car there.
